Attention, mobile RSS junkies. Google’s released a new iPhone-specific version of its Google Reader feed reader. The new version which, unsurprisingly, is in beta, is supposed to bring many of the features available in desktop browsers: you can star items, share them with others, and mark them as unread, and navigate your subscriptions via folders. They also claim to have tuned it for better speed performance.
I’m not a regular Google Reader user, but I had at some pointed imported a bunch of my subscriptions into it, so I fired up the new version to see what the haps was (were?). At the moment, since it’s in beta, you’ll specifically need to point your iPhone to http://www.google.com/reader/i/ in order to check it out.
The speed on EDGE wasn’t super fast—something I might chalk that up to my volume of feeds/unread items—but it was certainly usable. If only it synced with NetNewsWire, I could imagine using it as for all my iPhone feed-reading needs.
Saw this last night. Google has had a much clunkier reader interface for iPhone that I've been using... but the ajaxy goodness in this new version makes it MUCH faster.
I've tried NetNewsWire... tried it for a whole two weeks. Google reader is such a better client in both the desktop web interface and the iPhone interface, especially now with the new iPhone interface.
Then use both!! I use NetNewsReader on my Mac and Google reader on my mac/iphone. I put the most important feeds on Google reader (nytimes, applematters, TUAW, NPR, etc) and the others on NewsGator (techbargains, dealnews, macupdate, etc.) This way i use gReader for the ones I WANT in the morning, in-between appointments, etc -- and NetNewsWire when I'm fully connected w/ my Mac and have the time to look at more feeds. Also helps to have newsgator online for the iphone when you're stuck somewhere and have run out of fresh gReader feeds. and yes, my name is PetieG and I'm an internet news junkie!
Why not use NNW's iPhone app?
The new version seems slower to me. I also don't like the way they have removed the "back" arrow button.
