iPhone 2.0 makes Mail weapon of mass deletion

iPhone mailYesterday’s iPhone event may have seemed like it was all SDK all the time, but Apple’s press release on the forthcoming iPhone 2.0 firmware update points out that there are a couple other features that’ll be riding App Store’s coattails, particularly in the phone’s workhorse Mail application.

According to the press release, you’ll now be able to view PowerPoint presentations as attachments in Mail. Er…yay. No, really: good for business types, I suppose, but not really a barn-burner for me.

The second, though, is one of those features that we’ve been clamoring for pretty much since the first time we started swiping to delete mail messages. iPhone 2.0’s Mail will allow you to delete or move emails en masse. Hallelujah! Finally, a way to get rid of all those pesky Viagra and Cialis messages without the old swipe, tap, swipe, tap, swipe, tap—you see where I’m going with this.

June cannot come soon enough.

Man, this sounds like last year huh? "I can't wait for June. " all over again. ;-) it was a fun wait though.

If you could open PowerPoint files, could you use the video out to present them on a TV or HD Monitor? What about Keynote files? The only feature I want is to be able to voice dail a phone number!

Mass deletion of email is great. But where's the hue and cry for (a) copy and paste and (b) searching contacts, events, etc. for a word or phrase?

Copy and paste is very fundamental to doing email and much else. (E.g., copying an address from one email or web page to use as the address for a new email.)

The ability to search contacts, events, notes, etc. was an important capability of the Treo for me. I often want to find the contact for someone whose last name I don't remember but I do remember a company name, street name, name of spouse, something that would be in the Notes field, etc.

@Rike Miller: You could use Keynote to "Export to Quicktime" and then use your presentation as a video..in theory. I haven't actually seen it done or tried it but I have heard it discussed over on MacBreak Tech.

Deleting emails in message is great if you feel like deleting every piece of spam that you get but how about enabling a junk filter instead? Or how about the ability to view an MMS? And i agree with the above comment about copy/paste; the magnifying glass is much less useful.

Apple is slacking on basic features that are holding the iPhone back from being the best of both worlds for business folks and the regular consumer. If they took care of a simple few features they would be a Blackberry killer on every level.

@Jim, you must be new. Dan himself has mentioned search several times and everyone knows that cut and paste is the most glaring omission--of course, no one knows how to implement it either.

I completely agree about the copy/paste issue, but I have learned to get by without it and still use my iPhone as a AWESOME tool.

With regards to searching, this can be done using a "hack" utility right now so I am sure when June rolls around, the "hacked" version will be available legitimately.

Consider that it may be possible using the SDK to make any number of apps capable of searching the contacts, notes, mail and SMS databases. Not having seen the SDK, I don't know.

That being said, it would really be great if Apple's Contacts and Calendar apps for the iPhone would start respecting categories created using Address Book and iCal. ;->

Iphone is the best phone on the market! I have owned every phone out there ant the Iphone is the easiest and most advanced phone to date," Period. There are no limits to what the iphone can do, being that you can access over a thousand applications on the web to use on your iphone. With the new update to be released in june, you will be able to have any program you want on your iphone. Name one other phone on the market today that you can add programs to? Well, Im waiting, none. This is the best thing since the invention of the home computer and even better because it fits right in your pocket. I have owned treo 755, blackberries, and everything in between and I wouldn't own anything else. Before you decide to by a new phone, go to your local At&t dealer and take a few moments to use the iphone. At&t has working iphones in the store that you can play with, make phone calls and check your emails. Iphones ease of use is incredable, Unlike windows os or palm. If there is something about the iphone that you dont like, trust me there will be an update to make you happy before you know it. The iphone just keeps getting better and better every day, I wouldn't own any thing else.
