In Russia, it’s iPhone for president

Medvedev What newly elected world leader is a big fan of the iPhone? If you guessed Russia’s new president, Dmitri Medvedev (pictured), then please accept this generous prize of 25 rubles! According to an article in the Washington Post, the successor to Vladimir Putin counts the iPhone as his “latest passion.”

What’s interesting, as The Weekly Standard points out, is that the iPhone is, of course, not on sale in Russia. That said, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that one of the most powerful men in Russia has gotten his hands on the latest hot gadget in the world. Nor do I imagine he had to pay that much to get it, though the gray market prices of the iPhone are probably pretty far up there.

But, as in other places where the iPhone is not yet legitimately available, it appears that the device has become a sort of status symbol, with many high-ranking Kremlin officials purportedly carrying them around. Khorosho: all according to plan.
