Say hello to the 16GB iPhone
For the first time since the iPhone’s release, Apple’s rolled out a new hardware version of the handset, one which doubles the included storage to 16GB of flash memory, for a cost of $499. The 8GB unit remains $399, which means that the same cost that fetched you a 4GB iPhone back in July now gets you four times as much capacity. Meanwhile, the iPhone’s cousin, the iPod touch high-end model has gotten a boost to 32GB, with 8GB and 16GB capacities still on the shelves.
This isn’t a huge surprise: it’s still too soon for Apple to roll out something as new as a 3G iPhone or one with GPS rolled in, and the only other hardware spec waiting to be changed was the amount of flash memory. If nothing else, this does signal that flash memory prices are descending pretty rapidly. The timeframe fits, roughly, with the progression of iPod capacities, which have increased markedly in the past several years, but it’s interesting to note that the 32GB of memory model did not make its way to the iPhone. The only reason I can see for that is to keep some sort of distinction between the touch and the iPhone.
Does bumping up the iPhone’s capacity to 16GB answer your hopes, your dreams, your prayers? Let us know.

it's nice to have an extra 16gb, but nope, no wet dreams here.

My first thought with the initial introduction of the 16GB Touch and now the 32 is that supplies of the high end chips are limited. By limiting higher capacity to just one product, Apple runs less risk of having a component shortage forcing the more popular item to be back-ordered while the other, less popular one, is sitting in a warehouse with that component unused.
One of the advantages of the product line simplification instituted by Jobs was the ability to use a small variety of components in vast quantities. I think Apple has gotten remarkably savvy about the manufacturing end of the business.

More memory is always a good thing. I am one of those "I want all my music with me" folks so I will be keeping my iPod for the foreseeable future.

People keep asking why the difference in the top amount of memory in th iPhone vs Touch. Is is possible that the reason for this is that the iPhone uses more space for the phone part of the iPhone?
Have they both been broken open? Does anyone have info?

@Alan: I don't think that's likely. The iPhone and iPod touch could both accommodate the 8GB chip, and the the iPod touch is slimmer than the iPhone. I'd have to imagine that if increasing the storage to 16GB on the iPod touch was no problem, they could fit the 16GB chip into the iPhone—if they wanted to.

My wishes and dreams for the iPhone is some added Apple software function. Things like Todo lists and notes from ical. I understand why that might not have been in the initial release, but by now I expected those simple functions. It would be even nicer to have a Keynote, Pages and Numbers for iPhone since we have MAC OSX. On my Palm PDA I had Word, PPT and Excel. Having Apples suite on iPhone could help Apples penetration in that space.

I could care less about more memory at this point - 8GB is enough for me right now. Gimmie cut/paste functionality for crying out loud! Sheesh..
Oh, and while I'm on my soap box complaining, gimmie file system capability/storage! They allow it on the iPod - why not iPhone?! Grr...

If I had to choose today which one to buy, I might buy the 16 GB model, just to have the biggest for forward thinking. Might. I'd have to think long and hard. I still have 3 GB left on my 8, and I have everything on there that I would have if I had the 16.

On the one hand I would like to have the 16gig. The other hand is that the $100 more I would have spent on the 16gig I was able to spend on a set of VibeDuo headphones. So I will just have to swap out content from time to time. Not the most convenient situation but at least I have sweet headphones.

ya know, this kinda annoys me. Instead of pushing and pissing off the customer base, they should have fixed all the software issues outstanding, released the SDK earlier to make the core base happy before screwing them over yet again.
As far as space, if I wanted to carry around EVERYTHING, I'd need an Ipod with a terrabyte of space. With 8 gigs, I just rely on smart lists to keep things flowing, and when I want to watch a flick, I adjust.
But come on Apple, it's beginning to look like a money machine instead of the innovative company I once knew.

My guess is that they're waiting until June to release a 32GB iPhone. You may be right about Apple wanting to maintain a distinction between the iPhone and iPod Touch, so I wouldn't be surprised if whenever they unveil a 32GB iPhone, they also increase the iPod Touch memory. Maybe we're going to hear about an iPod Touch memory upgrade every time we hear about an iPhone one.
