iPhone vs. semi-trailer

iPhone, run overHere’s another one to file away under iPhone durability. We’ve seen how well the iPhone handles a direct shot from a golf ball (hint: not great). But how will it deal with being run over by a semi truck? Mike Beauchamp accidentally left his iPhone on the back of his car while pulling onto the freeway. This is what we calll, in technical terms, an “oopsie.”

Thus followed a succession of miracles. Not only did Mike manage to find his phone on the highway, but he also watched it get run over by a tractor trailer, crossed the road without dying, and found the iPhone…which was ringing.

As I picked it up and cradled it gently in my hands, I saw the screen displaying my caller ID — the screen still worked! I slid my finger gently over the answer slide and paused as I held the tattered and torn device to my ear — my heart must have skipped a beat when I heard my mom’s voice at the other end of the phone — the phone still worked!
Geez. For a full account of the story and some pictures of the traumatized phone, check out Mike’s Flickr stream. We still suggest, however, that you not put your phone on the back of your car when you’re at a rest stop.
