iPhone 1.1.4 is all about the bug fixes
As you may have read over at our lovely parent site (or seen as you plugged your iPhone into iTunes), firmware update 1.1.4 is on its way down the tubes. I’ve already upgraded my phone to the latest available software, so I can take full advantage of its brand new…er…bug fixes.
Seriously, that’s all Apple is giving us. “Bug fixes.” 162MB worth of bug fixes, to be sure, but I’ve already been through all the apps, and nothing major has jumped out at me. The most logical theory seems to be that Apple is setting the stage for the iPhone Software Development Kit, which is still as far we know due out sometime this week, making sure that the iPhone’s software is as secure and stable as possible before unleashing hordes of anxious developers upon the platform.
Have you upgraded? Run into any bugs that 1.1.4 mysterious fixes? Let us known in the comments below.

I have been using a Jailbroken phone for months now as I would MUCH rather have the extra applications (many of which are indispensable now that I am used to using them).
I have waited on updating my phone (i am still using 1.1.1) as I dont want to go through all the hoops necessary to get things working with 1.1.3 (and now 1.1.4)
I, like EVERY iPhone user, am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the SDK, but I figure that still means another month or so before we have "approved" apps.
Whatsmore, the interface of Installer.App is so easy, I am really hoping that something like that is around (I have heard about installing a push from iTunes) but I would like to see the Installer.App interface as an "option"

I tried to upgrade and my installation never actually finished, leaving my phone in recovery mode and without being able to restore it. Still in the process... we will see the outcome.

I finally go internet sharing to work with my MBP...

I had the same issue as Martin. I tried restoring a few times and the problem did not get resolved. I had to delete the database and restore from scratch. This wiped out everything (notes, pictures, settings, etc.) It was like starting all over.
Once I did that, the install worked.

Reporting back... after a few trials and errors, it restored my phone and a back-up and then installed the new version. Not quite polished but it pulled through...

hopefully it sets up for the release f the sdk. so far i can tell that my bluetooth headset is much better and all of my old safari pages still show the last page i was on, not just a blank white page.
nothing else seems different.

1.1.4 BROKE MY TOUCH!
after restoring, all of my content is gone, as is the $20 software I have paid for. I'm steamed. Between home and business, the last 27 computers I've purchased are macs, but the way they are forcing software on me, and the necessity to pair the touch with iTunes alone is going to make me a PC owning Creative Zen carrier!!!!!!!
ppppppffffffffffffftttttt!

I installed the upgrade quickly with no problems. I haven't found any of the so called "bug fixes" yet, but I don't seem to have any problems with it. Hopefully this is a precursor to the SDK.

Installed with no problems, never jailbroke my phone. Is it my imagination or is font smoothing a lot better in mobile safari? To my eye, the text looks 'tighter'.
Other than that, my battery problem has returned. Died within 30 minutes, only thing on was WiFi. Anyone else with the dying battery issue again?

I installed the 162 MB 1.1.4 and the only visible change I saw is that the multiple pages in Safari browser retain the content while flipping through and done turn 'white'

One of the major bug fixes that the update fixes (at least on my 16G model) is the Safari browser. Apparently, there was a bug in how the iPhone cached pages:
1. Before the update, any thumbnails that were open (use the lower right screen button to access) had NO IMAGE associated with them and when I touched them then the page loaded.
2. After the update, every page open has a thumbnail image and the page does not have to be loaded.

Another thing that I have noticed is that the user can now access cached pages (touch thumbnail view in Safari to view page) WHILE USING the phone. Also, if you have any "saved Pages" using a bookmarklet (which is possible even with non-jailbreaked iPhones), you can access them while on the phone.

Prior to 1.1.4, my iPhone would default to EDGE and I would repeatedly be forced to manually go into Network and connect to my Wi-Fi (802.11G w/ WPA2) - it would not automatically connect. With 1.1.4, whether powering on, starting from standby, or coming in from the outside (from EDGE to Wi-Fi), my iPhone now automatically joins my Wi-Fi network - I have not had the need to manually make it join the network.

i jail broke my iphone back in the days of 1.1.2 installed a load of apps then restored it for updating to 1.1.3 and really apart from summerboard there wasn't any apps i cant get in web app form! i used apollo for an instant messaging client and have since found that jivetalk's beejive web app is tones better! and with the advent of the SDK and 3rd party apps bought through itunes i wouldn't hold out on an update.
The main feature of the 1.1.4 update iv noticed is the stability of the phone and its apps, since updating i haven't had even the slightest hint of a slow response or even an app closing, i know its early days yet but it would crash an app daily before and slow down needing a restart once every other day before the update.

the phone does run a lot smoother but...my ringtones are ALLLL gone!!! I can't get it back I was still using 1.0.1 when I upgraded I guess I shouldn't have upgraded after all....
If anyone finds out how to add customer ring please email me D=

Since installing 1.1.4 (non jailbroken) the accelerometer seems extraordinarily glitchy. It's very slow to respond and sometimes doesn't respond at all. If an image is in landscape when the phone goes to sleep, it will NOT switch back unless I hit the home screen.
Also, the keyboard has gotten very slow. I had this problem with 1.1.2..but 1.1.3 eliminated the problem completely. Now it's back.

All of the emails in my inbox are addressed to someone else; a random address from my address book. Has anybody else had that problem? I don't think it was like that before the update.

Aye-yup, after reading all the comments on this, to date, I'm still sticking with my jailbroken 1.1.3 -- I agree with the guy who has had serious thoughts about switching to PC because of all the garbage with this. Steve, you'd better take note. You are seriously hacking off your loyal customer base.

I had no issues updating my 8 Gig iPhone. I did notice that when I now connect my iPhone to the dock, it says this isn't a compatible device. Some kind of weird bug there. It's the iPhone I'm connecting. How can it not be "the" compatible device? LOL!! Anyway, I just place it back in the dock again, and the battery icon shows up as usual.

Just upgraded to 1.1.4. Itunes indicated the update was complete. But the phone "looked" like it was stuck in a mode where it would just ask for the cable to be connected and then would show a the emergency call screen but then rotated the languages. I simply turned off my phone and power cycled it and it came back fine.
So beyond that little hurdle I started being an obnoxious user to try to test it. It seems very much more stable and faster in changing between functions. That is Apple's big challenge is to secure and stabilize the platform first. They are being smart.
For those that want the SDK, we appreciate that. But if they rush it like Windows then it's forever buggy and hacker prone. So just hang on to your GUI-fantasies and let Apple perfect the stability and security. Then they can unleash the SDK to the developers. I'd rather have a working phone than one that's been hacked and whacked.

I bought a 16 gig. On 1.1.3 it freezes once or twice a day.. usually after about an hour of listening to music.. seems to be very random. If I leave it alone its ok. I upgraded to 1.1.4 and it still does it.. Its jailbroken and ziphone unlocked, so i can't return it.
Any ideas?

Just upgraded to 1.14 and I have completely lost my ability to delete photos. The trash can isn't even there anymore. Anyone else with this issue?

Okay... first let me say I love my iPhone. However, what is up with the lack of basic features like MMS and video capabilities? I had both of these functions on my $50.00 Samsung with Verizon. Email my photos? I suppose that would be fine if everyone I knew also had an iPhone. I'm not a real techie so I'm not really sure what all the excitement is with SDK... I mean I sorta get it... but to me Steve Job's last press conference was a waste of time. And who among us really gives a S%^T about Exchange servers? Where's the BEEF (a.k.a. video, MMS, Flash)???
