Review: Incase Protective Cover for iPhone

Incase Protective CoverWith a name like Protective Cover for iPhone, where can you really go wrong? Well, you may need to start by putting asterisks next to “cover.” Incase’s offering is a $30 molded rubber case for the iPhone that has its fair share of strengths and weaknesses.

Using the Protective Cover couldn’t be easier: just slip the iPhone into the case, which has been hollowed out to fit the phone like a glove. Openings have been left for the headphone jack, camera, Ring/Silent switch, and there’s also a large opening at the bottom for the microphone, speaker, and dock-connector port. In addition, the case provides useful raised nubs that let you easily find and use the volume buttons and Sleep/Wake button. The large opening at the front makes putting the phone in and taking it out of the case a snap, but the downside is that it provides no protection at all for the iPhone’s screen, though it does make using the multi-touch interface easy.

The molded rubber is somewhat thicker than many of the silicone skin iPhone cases you’ll find on the market, but the case doesn’t add that much bulk to the phone’s profile; it’s still easy enough to slip the whole thing in your pocket. The combination of the rubber’s tactile feel and the swirly fingerprint-like pattern molded into the case do confer one major benefit: it makes the phone’s slippery exterior considerably easier to get a grip on. And the material is thick enough to provide some protection if you drop the iPhone, unless, of course, you drop it on the uncovered screen.

As with many other cases, the Protective Cover suffers from one irritating issue: due to the large opening for the screen, dust and other small particles can become trapped beneath the case, especially if you keep it in your pocket. Such particles won’t usually hurt the phone, though they can in some instances scratch the chrome ring around the iPhone’s screen. It’s hard to prevent this from happening, but from time to time, it’s probably worth it to take the phone out of the case and brush it off.

The $30 price tag is a bit steep for what the Protective Cover is: a piece of rubber that protects only half of the phone. Plus, some of the colors are slightly on the garish side, such as the cyan model that I tested, though that’s largely a matter of personal preference. Overall, the Incase Protective Cover for iPhone is a solid iPhone case, but not one that stands out from the crowd.

I have this and I love it. Its not huge and bulky and I don't have to open anything to get to the screen. To protect the screen, at least from scratches, I use Power Support Anti-Glare Film Set for iPhone, search for that on the apple store.
The combo of the 2 seem to work really well!

I own the pink (magenta) version of this case and I love it. I use a crystal film cover, also sold by Apple, to protect the screen and so far my iphone is intact. The only thing I would add is that the cover is sticky, so it is sometimes difficult to slide the phone in and out of a pocket or purse.

I'm now on the second of this model case for my iPhone. It works perfectly for the first month or two, but over time just from taking it in and out of my pocket, the rubber becomes stretched out and the fit is looser and looser. Take a look at the reviews on Apple's store and you'll find the same complaint:

I have had three of these cases since the iPhone came out. I have a love-hate relationship with them. I love how much easier the phone is to hold and the thick rubber, however, I don't like how the case stretches. Every night, I take the phone out of its case and place it in its dock. In this process, the case stretches to the point where it will no longer hold the phone securely. I know that the simple answer is to leave it in the case and plug a cable in, but I like the dock too much.

I have this case in black. It is horrible especially with that price. It doesn't protect the screen and the particles getting inside and scratching the chrome isnt a small deal. After a couple of weeks this case starts to strecth causing it to not fit like a glove and that is extremely irritating because it tends to slip off on occasions. You want a real case, get the otter box defender. Its price tag is pretty steep but wow can it protect an iphone.

if you are a freak like me and likes to keep the chrome silver clean, don't get this case! Had it for at least a week, when I took it off to clean the phone, scratches were everywhere due to the dust that gets in. I recommend vajacases.com. Real nice! By the way does anyone have anything that might solve the issue of the chrome scratches?

I have a black Incase, and it's great—I've had it for months. It's better than anything else I've been able to find. Having said that, the Incase has a HUGE problem with stretching and wearing out. It doesn't always slip easily into your pocket either b/c of the rubber material, but it doesn't slip off your desk so it's an even trade. Still, it has become a loose-fitting protective cover and NOT worth $30. A friend of mine had the same one for a month, and he had similar stretching problems. In addition, one of the corners ripped within a few weeks. He sucked it up and paid another $30 for a replacement! Disappointing. But alas, it's the best thing available at this point....

I had this case a while back and within a week it had stretched so much that the iPhone could fall out of it. I love the design, but that killed it for me, so I went case-less from then on...

That is, until my iPhone glass cracked recently and I had to pay $250 to get a replacement. Not fun. Now, of course, I'm on the lookout for a new case.

I've had one of these for a few months and overall it works pretty well. Luckily I haven't dropped the phone yet so I can't comment on whether or not it protects it from catastrophe.

THE PROS:

- True, it doesn't protect the screen directly, but it also allows for immediate use without having to remove a screen cover.
- The rubber does extend above the screen a bit so if you lie it face down the screen doesn't touch the surface.
- That same rubber edge really works GREAT for vertical scrolling. I just rest my finger on the rubber and slide up and down, makes it much less likely to accidentally slide scroll. (Slide scrolls are annoying once you've zoomed into a web column.)
- No features are obstructed, so you can use every button and port (headphones, charger, camera, etc) without having to remove it. Except the dock, see below.
- The black case really looks great. I hated all the other colors.

THE CONS:

- The case prevents the phone from fitting into the standard dock.
- I have several friends who say the case stretched out after a few months. Mine's been great for five months and it still fits fine.
- As the article mentioned, it will slightly scratch the chrome edges a tiny bit.
- The rubber has a lot more friction than the metal phone, so it takes considerably more work to get it in and out of a front pocket.

The one problem I have with this case (it was the first of 3 i've had) is that it gets kind of stretched out around the edges of the phone, thus leaving the case with a not so snug fit.

I used this case for about a month, until I took it off to put a screen protector on my iPhone and saw that my chrome trim was badly scratched. The cover stretches/flexes, allowing dirt and dust to get underneath. There are many posts in mac forums regarding this. My advice is to get a more rigid case - you shouldn't have to protect your iPhone from the cover you bought to protect the phone!
