Purported 1.1.3 iPhone firmware leaked

iPhone 1.1.3We’d be remiss if we didn’t say something about all those screenshots and videos of iPhone software 1.1.3 floating around the web. The features shown therein seem pretty plausible for the most part: we know Google’s already rolled out its “My Location” service to other cell phone platforms, and given the tight bonds between Apple and the Goog, it’s little surprise that it would make its way to the iPhone, and the hybrid map view has long been part of Google Maps, so that should be shocking to no one.

The other major feature showed off in the pictures and videos is the management of icons on the iPhone’s home screen. There’ve been a number of third-party applications that replace the Springboard.app, and given that we know the SDK is due in February, it’s only a matter of time before iPhone users will start to run out of space on the home screen. So, according to the video, you’ll be able to hold down on an icon on the home screen and then drag it around to reorder; if you drag it to the edge, it’ll even create a new “page” of the home screen. There’s also the ability to send SMS to multiple users and a way to add Safari bookmarks to the iPhone’s home screen.

Of course, it goes without saying that you should take all of this with a grain of salt. I don’t think the videos or screenshots are fake, but as this is certainly a development build, there’s always the possibility that Apple will release something that looks substantially different from what we’re seeing here. Still, it seems likely that we’ll see the 1.1.3 update in one form or another sometime around Macworld.

Has anyone there heard any rumours about an update to the calendar app on the iPhone? In particular, are they planning to make the iPhone calendar capable of acting as a client to the iCal server that is now part of leopard server (in contrast to just syncing as is now)? To me, this would be a major completion of the main capabilities of the iPhone - for the calendar to have dynamic real time interactive functionality akin to e-mail, so that one could keep access to one's schedule right up-to-date.

Don't forget that Gear Live is responsible for the screenshots and videos.

Sure, great, maps, more icons. How about Flash on the web, we're missing a HUGE chunk of web content here. How about cut & paste? How about synchronizing notes? How about being able to save mail text as a note? Or a search function to find a specific name, text string, or number in calendar or contacts? I love the iPhone, but these are still VERY glaring omissions in the functionality of this device. Palm and other "competitors" have had these features for years!

Wow! I hadn't thought of that idea for the calendar, but it makes a lot of sense, that would be really neat! especially if it was true two-way integration.

Sure would be nice ... even necessary, to be able to search the Contacts file ... esp. the 'notes'. I'm pretty bad w. names, and most of the contacts in my AddressBook I find w. searching ... only being able to find the name if you know the name is a real limitation for the iPhone.

Its the best device that i ever had but theres alot features that are missing like the mms wich I think its one of the popular app that any phone has to have and instead making the gps better and icons they should put that
