Jailbreaking iPhone 1.1.2
During the week’s quest to install third-party applications on my iPod touch running 1.1.2 of the iPod software I was asked if the same technique worked with the iPhone.
Nope. Try a simple downgrade to software version 1.1.1 from within iTunes and you’re faced with a seemingly inescapable error. Fortunately, you can restore the iPhone to 1.1.2 and it works perfectly.
But it can be done. It’s simply a matter of assembling the right collection of tools. Follow along after the jump to learn how I did it on my Intel Mac.
Tools required:
- iPhone running 1.1.2 software
- iTunes 7.4.2
- iNdependence 1.3 beta 2
- 1.1.2 Jailbreak
- iPhone software 1.1.1
Disclaimer: I've tested this a couple of times and it's worked fine. However, you may not be so lucky. You're on your own. Note, however, that if you hit a wall, you should be able to upgrade your phone back to 1.1.2 just by plugging it into your Mac and clicking Restore in iTunes.
Now that you've been warned, here's how to go about it.
1. If you've upgraded to iTunes 7.5 you'll need the earlier 7.4.2 version. Download and install it.
Note that iTunes 7.5 uses a MobileDevice.framework file that is incompatible with the following procedure and that file will still be on your Mac, even after the installation of iTunes 7.4.2. iNdependence, which you'll use later, requires the version of MobileDevice.framework that shipped with iTunes 7.4.2. You can find it here.
2. Go to your user folder/Library/iTunes and look for an iPhone Software Updates folder. With luck that folder will contain an iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw file. If it does, you don't need to download the iPhone software 1.1.1 as you already have it.
If you just got your iPhone and it has 1.1.2 installed on it, you will need to download the 1.1.1 version of the software. If you download it with Safari, Safari will automatically expand the zip file. This isn't what you want. Instead, open the folder (now named iPhone1,1_1), select everything in it, Control-click on one item, and choose Create Archive of x items from the contextual menu. Remove the .zip extension and name the file iPhone1,1_1.ipsw.
3. Plug in your iPhone, select it in iTunes' Source list, and open the Summary tab. Hold down the Mac keyboard's Option key and click Restore.
A dialog box will appear. Navigate to the iPhone Software Updates folder and choose the iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw file (or iPhone1,1_1.ipsw file, if you created one) file. iTunes will "update" your phone with the older version of the software.
4. At the end of the update, iTunes will display a 1015 error. Don't worry about it, that's expected. You'll be told that your iPhone is in recovery mode and must be restored. Don't restore it in iTunes.
5. Open the iNdependence folder and double-click the iNdependence MobDev Tool file. It will tell you if you have a version of the MobileDevice.framework file. If you don't, a navigation dialog box appears. Choose the iTunes 7.4.2 version of the MobileDevice.framework file you downloaded.
6. Launch iNdepedence. If it tells you that it's waiting for the phone, unplug the phone from your Mac and then plug it in again. Wait a minute or so and the iPhone will display its activation screen. iTunes should offer to activate it. Allow it to do so. The phone will tell you that it's waiting for AT&T's activation. As far as I can tell, in its current state it will wait until doomsday. Mine never activated.
7. The iPhone is now running software version 1.1.1. Launch Safari and and enter "jailbreakme.com" in the address field. You'll be taken to the AppSnapp page. Flick down to the bottom of the page and tap Install AppSnapp. The application will launch and install the Installer application that allows you to put third-party applications on your phone.
8. Tap the now-installed Installer, tap the Install icon at the bottom of the screen, flick down to the Tweaks (1.1.1) folder, and tap OktoPrep to install it.
9. If not already plugged into your Mac, jack in your phone, launch iTunes, select the phone in iTunes' Source list, and in the Summary tab you should be told that your iPhone software stands at 1.1.1 and you can update to 1.1.2. Click Update (not Restore!).
10. After iTunes updates your phone to version 1.1.2, quit iTunes, open the Jailbreak 1.1.2 folder you downloaded from Conceited Software and double-click on the jailbreak.jar file. Follow the instructions in the resulting window to jailbreak your phone and install the Installer application. If you'd like the option to later SSH into your phone, enable the Install SSH option.
In a few minutes you'll be asked to restart your phone. When you do, it will boot and restart again. After that second restart, the Installer application will be on the iPhone's screen, ready to do your bidding. Your phone should activate with AT&T within a couple of minutes.
11. Run Installer and install BSD Subsystem and Community Sources.
Done. Your iPhone now runs software 1.1.2 and allows the installation of third-party applications.

So, assuming I already Jailbroken and have as "hacked" 1.1.1, how do I go about upgrading to 1.1.2 and still get access to all my cool utilities?
The only reason I am considering 1.1.2 is for the improved battery life (or so I have been told).
Really, I dont have any other compelling reason to upgrade to 1.1.2.
And assuming at some point I would like to upgrade to 1.1.3 or 1.2 (maybe Apple will finally add the ToDo Manager) will it work with the "jailbroken" phone or will it brick my phone?
Posted by Mike Erickson | November 16, 2007 7:04 PM
Mike: You install OktoPrep, upgrade to 1.1.2 with iTunes (Upgrade, not Restore), download Jailbreak 1.1.2, and run jailbreak.jar.
Jailbreak.jar puts Installer on your 1.1.2 phone (and, optionally, OpenSSH as well). When you upgrade you'll lose any third-party apps you had on your iPhone under 1.1.1 so you'll have to use Installer to install them again. Not a big deal, in my opinion, but you might think differently.
An update is highly unlikely to brick your phone. This exploit isn't touching the modem firmware, where the problem resulted in the past. At worst, you could restore your phone to 1.1.2 in iTunes, which takes it back to ground zero without any hacks and brand new firmware. At that point you can update to the next version.
Of course, history has taught us that it's a really good idea to wait a few days before upgrading your iPhone to see how others have done.

Can someone help me. When I get to the Mobile Device part trying to get that to run doesn't work. I downloaded the Mobile Device Framework and first downloaded and installed ITunes 7.4.2 and when I test Independence I follow those instructions but I get an error that says Error copying MoibleDevice library into the Independence application bundle. When I choose the MobDev Tool i do what the instructions say there and first choose the zip framework on my desktop and then i choose Independence in my application folder. I'm stuck. Can someone help me or tell me what I am doing wrong. Thank you very much

When i try to select MobileDevice.framework it doesnt do anything. and when i try to open up INdependence it tells me that there is an error and tells me to relaunch the application. Please help i want my 3rd party apps back!!!!

I have the exact same problem as Thom when attempting to downgrade to firmware 1.1.1. I'm unable to select the MobileDevice even though I've downloaded the correct one for iTunes 7.4.2, and independence will not launch. I keep getting stuck on this particular step and eventually had to give up and restore my phone back to firmware 1.1.2.

Ok, make sure you copy the INdependence program to your hard drive. Then when you open iNdependence MobDev Tool file a window will ask you to locate the MobileDevice.framework file. Select that folder. Then a new window will open and ask you to select the INdependence program you copied to your hard drive.
Select it and MobileDevice.framework file will be connected to the INdependence program for the update.
Hope this helps.

Kyle thank you for the information but I get an error that says Error copying MoibleDevice library into the Independence application bundle when I choose the independence program. That is where I'm getting stuck. My Mobiledevice framework file is on the desktop and then I select the Indepence program that is in applications. Thanks for your help. I do appreciate it.

Well, after MULTIPLE attempts, I get "an unknown error occurred (1602)" trying to update to 1.1.2 (step #9). I'm never asked by iTunes if I'd like to activate the phone. The phone goes through the activation process but never actually makes it happen. I've followed all of the steps to the letter, but when ready to update to 1.1.2, I get that 1602 error code...

Can someone please post a "how to" video on youtube or something! I can't get this stupid process to work and its really frustrating. I know its my fault for installing the update, but I really want my apps. back! I liked them a lot! And I would really liked them back. If anyone decides to do youtube please send the link. Thanks guys for all the help

For those of you having trouble:
What version of OS X are you using?
And you're all attempting this on Intel Macs, right?

Hi Chris. I am using a Powerbook G4 OS 10.4.1. I have sucessfully installed the jailbreak until verision 1.1.2 came out. And that is when I can't get it done correctly. So after reading your entry I gues because I don't have an IntelMac I wont be able to do it at all. Sigh

Being just a typical IPhone user and not understanding SSH and Terminal and Mobiledevice, to name a few, I was very frustrated with jailbreaking my Iphone and getting the Installer Apps on it, espeically after I updated to ITunes 1.1.2. I urge anyone having problems like I have to go to http://bitsplit-enterprises.com/ and use IFuntastic. Chris has worked on this very hard and is a very patient person. I followed the instructions and finally my phone is jailbroken. I have tried all others to no avail. This program is great and works. I urge you all to donate to him for all his hard work. Take it from someone that only knows how to use the basics of the IPhone...IT WORKS.

Mike et al,
Sorry for the silent treatment. I'm on vacation so I'm not checking in very often. If anyone is still having problems, check the new version of Jailbreak 1.1.2, which Dan Moren references here. My guess is that those who were hitting the wall were doing so because they were attempting the jailbreak on a PPC Mac. The new version should help with that.
Naturally you should check the documentation that comes with Jailbreak 1.1.2 and follow its guidance.

Running 1.1.2 and can install apps.
Thanks, I have been fighting for days, I think the biggest thing is to not use Itunes 7.5!

I have experienced the exact same issue with selecting the mobilesevice (which I obtained from the link included in Chris' post) as described by so many other posters when trying to downgrade from firmware 1.1.2 to 1.1.1. As a result, Independence will not launch correctly. I'm stuck at boring 1.1.2 FW. And yes, I have followed all the directions outlined above including dowgrading to iTunes to 7.4.2. Please help as I really miss my 3rd party apps (I inadvertently 'restored' to 1.1.2 rather than 'upgrade' after installing oktoprep on 1.1.1).

I tried over and over, no success.
I've decided to resort to 1.1.2 factory and restored though itunes evrything worked fine except the fact that i cant use my phone????
I have a At&t iphone and now I have a no service icon.
I thought if this didn't work(hack that is) you could just go back to factory settings and all would be great.
Well now i have no phone!!!!!!
Is there any help or suggestions to getting my phone back to working condition before the holiday??????

Thanks in advance.
Posted by MilesD | November 26, 2007 11:37 PM
Miles: Yes, you can use iTunes 7.5. iTunes will treat the phone just like any other 1.1.2 iPhone. However, if you RESTORE the phone, you'll lose the hack and will have to start over.
So, uh, well... don't.

yes you just need to downgrade to 1.1.1
Posted by x | November 28, 2007 7:45 PM
For those having problems with iNdependance (like I did for step 5-6).
iNdependence will not work unless your have your correct Mobileframework going with itunes 7.4.2...just installing WILL NOT overwrite these files, and many (myself included) have problems selecting the files with the ind. mobile dev tool.
First, you MUST delete these files BEFORE installing iTunes 7.4.2
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework
/Library/Receipts/AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg
or:
http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2007/10/03/iphone-or-ipod-touch-not-recognized-restartreinstall-apple-mobile-device-service/
After that, delete iTunes and install 7.4.2. It should now have the correct mobileframework associated with it allowing iNdependence to work without the issu of selecting the framework....
I was stuck on this forever, just thought you all should know..
Once you run the oktoprep, then update to 1.1.2, run the jailbreak.tar and click jailbreak + install SSH.
Hope helps.

Hi,
I bought a recent iPhone from US (probably 1.1.2) and am trying to have it work on the Fido network in Canada.
With the ATT SIM not activated, the only thing I get is a screen with a iTunes logo asking me to «Insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate the iPhone». My other option is to display the keypad to make an emergency call. I also tried it with my Fido SIM card and I get the same result.
What do I do from here ?
Thanks in advance.

I had a hell of a time figuring out the 1.1.2 crack, I would continue to get all of the way through the process everytime until i would get to upgrading from the downgraded jailbroken 1.1.1 to the newly jailbroken 1.1.2 everytime it would go all the way through the upgrade and give me a 1602 error. over and over again id get so frustrated cause i couldnt get then i figured it out. for all of you that get the 1602 error around step 9, Click option then upgrade and then navigate to the 1.1.2 firmware upgrade, then continue with the jailbreak.jar file. I have a general question about the after part of the jail break. Is it okay upgrade iTunes back to 7.5 or will it break the jailbreak??? I just don't want to have to deal with doing all this again.

You can update to 7.5 if you want. You'll only lose the jailbreak if you update or restore the iPhone.

I live in Mexico, and I do not (can not) activate with AT&T. However, I can not get trough the FIRST step of the other post : (With iTunes open and the iPhone connected, hold down the Sleep and Home buttons on the iPhone for roughly 15-20 seconds, until it displays a picture of the iTunes icon and a cable plugging into it. iTunes will now detect the iPhone in recovery mode and display the following message:).
When I turn on the iPhone, it is already showing the picture with iTunes and a cable. And iTunes NEVER displays the purported message.
What can I do?

I dont have wi-fi, so without At&T activated i cant get into safari. Thus i cant get the installer without upgrading. is there a way around this? or do i have to find wi-fi?

I am up to the last step and have spend hours to figure it out. I downgraded to 1.1.1, got the installer ap, got the oktoprep (or w/e its called) to get it ready for 1.1.2. When I update to 1.1.2, i loose the Installer Ap. I ran jailbreak.jar (jailbreak + install SSH) after the update and i still dont see the Installer. What the hell am I missing?

How long should it take Indepence to work? Everything has gone perfect to this step; now I am stalled waiting for Indepence to reboot.

Everything is working well, expect I am hanging when after having booted Independence. (And I did validate that it was installed correctly and had the correct files).
Anythoughts on getting past the boot? How long should this take?

this does not work!!!
when i navigate to the mobiledevice.framework it errors ever single time...
bogus below:
Open the iNdependence folder and double-click the iNdependence MobDev Tool file. It will tell you if you have a version of the MobileDevice.framework file. If you don't, a navigation dialog box appears. Choose the iTunes 7.4.2 version of the MobileDevice.framework file you downloaded.
