New iPhone hack is scary, and scary awesome

AppTappIt’s true: after the 1.1.1 update to the iPhone, I thought things would never again be the same when it came to installing third-party applications. But I should never have doubted my own sage words of advice. If anything, the latest method of installing third-party applications is even easier than the prior AppTapp method: you don’t even have to connect the iPhone to your computer.

Before installing, it’s recommended you get on a Wi-Fi network and set your phone’s auto-lock to “never” (under Settings -> General -> Auto Lock). Then just point Safari towards jailbreakme.com. Read the information, and then head down to the bottom where it says “Install AppSnapp.” Clicking that link will cause Safari to quit and return you to the home screen—but don’t touch anything yet. After a minute or so, the iPhone will return you to the “Slide to unlock” screen. And then you’re all set: on your Home screen you’ll find the icon for the new Installer.app (which, incidentally, is a lot slicker-looking than even the earlier versions).

Now, here’s the scary part. This hack relies on a vulnerability in Safari’s handling of TIFF files, meaning that essentially it’s giving arbitrary code on the web access to your entire phone. If that worries you, don’t install this hack. The good news, however, is that if you install the hack, it will supposedly patch that vulnerability. So there you go! Me, I’m just psyched to have third-party apps back.

I am SO TEMPTED to try this out! I REALLY REALLY REALLY need a non Web based To Do Manager and I am sure something exists but I wont be able to access without "hacking"

So, if I install this will the phone still work (AT&T) and all the other features of the phone still work?

What are the "risks" of installing this. I am not all that worried about bricking my phone because I thinking iPhone 2.0 with 16G of space will be available before year end or at least by MacWorld 2008.

You're unlikely to get your phone bricked. Even should something go wrong with the update, you should be able to restore the software from iTunes. Similarly, should Apple roll an update that disables third-party apps again, you'd lose your applications, but it shouldn't interfere with the rest of the phone functionality.

Thanks Dan!

So, after performing the jailbreak, where does one go to get all the new utility applications? I have seen numerous screenshots of "hacked" phones and numerous times I have seen a To Do utility... How can I find this?

@Mike: So, once you follow the instructions above, you should have the Installer icon on your home screen. Launch that up and go to the Install pane. Navigate to the sources folder and install the Community Sources. That'll give you a huge amount of packages to choose from. I'd try Productivity to find your To-Do app. Good luck!

Well, I skipped a step (didnt install the Community Sources). I was able to locate and install the ToDo Manager, but alas it doesnt run (just opens and closes when I tap the icon - just as if an application crashes).

That's a bummer, it looks like that is the only ToDo Manager available....

Well, I guess I am one of the unlucky folks who have "hacked" the iPhone as I am not able to get these of the utilities to work.

I have tried:

- Customize
- ToDo Manager
- Summerboard

In the first two, they just launch and quit immediately (crash) and in the case of Summerboard, I can cofigure it no problem, but it is never "active" (always shows Inactive at bottom)

Everything went fine and installer is loaded and visible. I can install Springboard and that works too. But EVERY OTHER third party application I've tried just crashes when launched. Tried this twice with a restore in-between. Same result. Anyone have any ideas?

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I have tried about 5-6 utils and they all do the same thing.

For me, the only think I have gotten to work is Summerboard and that took a complete phone reboot to work.

One of the utils I tried (address book search) didnt work so I emailed author and he told me the problem is probably permissions on the file and to use Installer.App to install (which I did)

Oh well, looks like I will be restoring soon as it appears most of the cool things arent working (yet).

To get most of the applications to work, you need to install two packages from within the Installer:
1) BSD Subsystem (in the System category)
2) Community Services (in the Services category)

I installed last night on my AT&T locked phone and everything else works just fine! I've been having fun with many of the apps now available...

Yippie!

Installing the BSD Subsystem (in the System category) did the trick and I can now use ToDo Manager (the whole reason for going down this road)

I will now try the other applications that I had tested!

Question: I know jailbreaking voids your warranty. Could iTunes somehow detect and send to apple your jailbreak status? If it doesn't now, might it do so in the future (i.e., within existing TOS)?

So, now that I am thrilled about being able to use hacks, I am looking to see if there is a utility that will emit a "louder" tone when incoming mail arrives (ala when an SMS message arrives).

Thanks for the help, Tuco!

"...a vulnerability in Safari’s handling of TIFF files, meaning that essentially it’s giving arbitrary code on the web access to your entire phone. "

WHAT!!!
Are you kidding me?!! There is a hole so large in the iPhone that some web site can access my ENTIRE phone?!
How could you possibly promote this (no matter what it does) as a GOOD thing?! Good grief, you don't even know FOR SURE that this site can patch the hole.

... unbelivably reckless.

Hey Guys,

i will receive an iPhone shortly and I was wondering if I can sync the unlocked phone with iTunes to have my music transferred to it. Are there any things I need to keep in mind or can I just plug it in, sync and then listen to my music?

Thx,
Patrick

Hey Cloud, the hole is there, left by Apple. Dont blame the ThirdApps. They use it and (even try) to cover it, making your phone safer. For me the "bad thing" is committed by Apple. I find it rather a "good thing" that ThirdApps hackers (the non-virus-producing-hackers) discovered it and is offering a solution for covering it up. But thats just me....

Reckless?

Reckless is ignoring the information and hanging on to the belief your phone is secure.

This is scarey exciting. Nice find.

i wanna uninstall appsnapp , how we do this?

This is really awesome, thanks guys! What I don't understand is - why isn't Apple all over themselves integrating 3rd party apps? Why are they so hell-bent on preventing people from downloading applications, games, all kinds of useful stuff that will make iphone more popular?
