So, after all the hoo-hah over the 1.1.1 update undoing SIM unlocks and third-party applications that we’d all enjoyed on the 1.0.2 firmware, does it mean the hackers have just given up? Of course not: these guys aren’t about to just roll over and die; to them, it just means a new puzzle to solve. They’ve been hard at work on scads of new tools for dealing with the 1.1.1 firmware.
For those still looking to unlock their phones and risk the wrath of any forthcoming iPhone updates, you have options such as the commercial iPhoneSimFree package or, if you, like me, are more of the frugal variety, you can try out the iPhone Dev Team’s AnySIM 1.1. Remember that if you do this, you should probably wait before upgrading to whatever iPhone update comes down the pipe, lest you end up with a bricky brick.
But enough about unlocking. What if you just can’t wait until the official SDK arrives in February and all the attendant apps begin to trickle out? Well, for you, such a deal: Nullriver has come up with a new version of their AppTapp installer that works with the 1.1.1 firmware. Unfortunately, it’s not quite as easy to install as the previous versions; you’ll need to jailbreak your phone, downgrade to 1.0.2, and then re-upgrade. On the bright side, that process has progressed quite a bit since we first linked to it a couple weeks back. Now, you can grab the graphical jailbreak app iNdependence, which also lets you manage custom ringtones, install SSH, activate your phone, and a whole lot more.
No, we’re not in the glory days of 1.0.2 anymore, but at least there’s still hope for the hack-loving among us. Had a chance to play with any of these apps? Chime in below.
w do you mean " the Glory days of 1.0.2", With independance and Installer.app, 1.1.1 is a MUCH better firmware to work with than 1.0.2, the best of both apple and the Community.
Most applications for 1.0.2 work on 1.1.1 (few exceptions) and on top of it you get new functionality built into 1.1.1 itself + iTunes on the go !
This article is late, are you guys sleeping !, just go to the Dev Team web page and check all the Apps already running on 1.1.1 !
Dev Team THUMBS UP . . . GREAT WORK ! 1.1.1 has ben completely hacke application and un-locking wise !
Right now only the re-virginizer is pending, this way anyone who unlocked 1.0.2 firmware iPhone will be apble to restore to out-of-the-bos status and then run the new Utilities to full 1.1.1 update, activate, jailbreak and un-lock !!
ENJOY 1.1.1 courtesy of the Dev Team...!!
but does it work with iPod Touch...?
RG,
You're missing the point entirely. Their reference to the golden days of 1.0.2 hacking was referring to how completely dead simple it was to hack a phone to get new apps onto the iPhone. The process for unshackling 1.1.1 using independence or ifuntastic is nowhere near as simple as it was/is with AppTap and 1.0.2. With 1.0.2, you run a native installer and wait just a few minutes while everything is taken care of. The failure rate of AppTap was very low.
With 1.1.1 you need to download several things, get everything prepared properly then switch back and forth between iTunes and independence or ifuntastic while it tries to help you jailbreak 1.1.1.
Look at the comments on the web... there are LOTS of people having problems getting this process to work, even when very carefully following the directions.
I'm one of those people. No matter how many times I follow the new directions the process never jailbreaks my 1.1.1 iPhone. And no, my phone's never been unlocked.
Some day there may be an updated AppTap which makes the process as easy and as bulletproof as it was under 1.0.2, but until then the number of people with 3rd party apps on their 1.1.1 iPhone will remain at significantly lower levels than in the 1.0.2 days.
Does anyone know if anyone is working on hacks for unlocking the Iphone for Verizon?? I don't want to have to switch back to AT&T
hi gurus, my question is, how do i fix my iphone? the top slider works to shut the phone off, but to get to apps the slider doesn't slide???>
