Feeling a little rundown? 1.1.1 may be to blame
In the first few days after installing 1.1.1, I started noticing that, for the first time, my iPhone’s battery life seemed to be suffering from a problem with premature exhaustion. At first I chalked it up to chance: perhaps I’d been overusing the phone, or maybe I just hadn’t been paying good enough attention.
But the other night, my iPhone’s battery ran all the way down, after a fairly normal amount of usage. At that point, I started investigating this problem with a thoroughness reminiscent of the great detectives of our age: Columbo, Miss Marple, and of course, Encyclopedia Brown.
What I found, sprinkled throughout Apple’s Discussion Boards, was a substantial number of anecdotal stories that seemed to concur with what I had noticed: after installing the 1.1.1 update, battery life appeared to be greatly reduced. Some users pointed fingers at the iPhone’s Wi-Fi implementation, which in some cases seemed to be having problems as well (I sometimes can’t find my home network when I’m sitting five feet from the router); others noted that the phone had grown increasingly warm (another symptom I’d noticed).
Several users have reported that restoring their phones firmware to 1.1.1 has alleviated the issue; others have gone so far as to take their phones back to the Apple Store and have them replaced. Given that the problem seems to have occurred with the advent of the 1.1.1 update, it suggests that what the software taketh away it could giveth back. But despite the fact the thread is listed as “Answered,” no official statement has been made by Apple, and no 100% effective solution found.
So, I ask you, fellow iPhoners: have you noticed anything of this sort? Battery life dropping, warm iPhones, problems with Wi-Fi? Hit the comments below and let us in on it.

I've noticed mine's seemed warmer. Usually it seems to be related to WiFi. And one night I went to sleep with a fully charged iPhone and woke up with an almost-dead one. Bizarre. All this with 1.1.1, but relatively recent, not right after the update.

Yes, I definitely noticed a dramatic decrease it battery life after the 1.1.1 update.

Now that you mention it, I have noticed the battery life has been shorter. Just this morning I was trying to figure out what I had done that had drained the battery overnight to about 20% from a full charge.

Immediately after installing the 1.1.1 upgrade I noticed reduced battery life and the iPhone definitely runs warmer.
Haven't particularly noticed any problems with wifi.
I am noticing more GSM interference on other devices - I used to keep my iPhone on my bedside table about 2 feet from a speakerphone with no problem but now I get GSM interference on the speakerphone.

I had this same problem, then I deleted 1.1.1 from my computer and re-installed it as described here:
http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2007/10/26/special-report-fixing-short-iphone-battery-life/#softwarefixes
don't know why it worked but it did!

I've been having inklings that something's been up with my battery life. I'm a heavy user and even though I normally charge the phone every night, I'm starting to notice that it will barely hold up to a day's worth of (relatively) heavy usage. This wasn't the problem "a while ago" (which may very well equate with the 1.1.1 update...)
Sigh...

Yes, my battery life has seemed to go down. I don't have a direct comparison because before it seemed OK. But not I have to recharged every day. And yes it does get warm but I'm not sure if more than before.

I just had this happen 3 days ago. I noticed that the day after an overnight charge, my battery life was 50%. I could not connect to my home WiFi router. The phone felt warm around the apple logo. Turning the phone off and back on solved my problem. I'm running 1.1.1 (no hacks).
Posted by UpgradeManiac | October 30, 2007 6:34 PM
I was having this problem before the 1.1.1 update. Actually I was having it all along--since I first got phone--which held me off from "loving" the phone as much as I wanted to.
I would go out and fiddle and play for about 20-40 minutes (total time, on & off throughout day) and my battery would be down to red! This is after I turned wifi off as I thought that might help. To top it off, I wasn't even using the iphone to its fullest potential. I was maybe reading my mail, checking out the occasional website and maybe chat on the phone a bit.
Apple is sending me a new phone, and the loaner phone they sent me works fine with 1.1.1, so I was figuring I got a dud. (until I read this!!)

I purchased my phone a couple weeks after the 1.1.1 upgade and upgraded right away. My battery has always seemed to have a short life. Frustrating!
Posted by Jeff Cleveland | October 30, 2007 6:46 PM
I had the same problem, my phone got pretty hot and the battery ran all the way down from fully charged state several times during the night. I tried to turn off Wifi but it happened even then once.
Finally I found the solution: I had to turn off "Use push mail". Now the battery problems are gone but of course I have to manually update my mails.

I am not noticing any of these problems on my 1.1.1 iphone.

I've had the same experience as Ward.

I have definitely noticed the battery life is diminished and it
also seems to run all the way down even though the phone has been off for quite a while.

I have to agree with battery life. It seems that 1.0.2 fixed a batery life issue and 1.1.1 added a new one. I have also noticed the phone is a bit hotter when charging. I also noticed that the phone was locking up or maybe stalling is a better word. When I touch the screen to activate something, it took the phone a minute to activate??? I restored the phone and it hasn't happened again. It still gets warm and there still seems to be a battery issue.
Posted by jared | October 30, 2007 7:45 PM
I had the same symptoms a while back (short battery life and warm in the back). I root caused it to be due to an email with a large attachment. I guess the iPhone didn't have time to completely download it in the time slots I was using it and kept retrying over and over, using the network. Moving the email to the trash wasn't enough: I had to actually completely delete it (discard from the trash).

Before the 1.1.1 update very good battery life. Immedialtely after update to 1.1.1 the battery runs dead after mild usage.
Posted by Jason | October 30, 2007 8:39 PM
I did notice some issues with the battery life after 1.1.1 was added to the phone. I really had a significant problem after installing Leopard. The battery would not last me through a full work day. I finally took the phone into Apple and had the phone replaced. I really find that odd since my wife's phone hasn't had any issues yet.
Posted by Jo | October 30, 2007 8:51 PM
No issues with my iPhone which I've had and used since the end of June. My battery usually falls to 50-70% after a day's use and charges surprisingly quickly, usually in less than an hour. I suspect that it might fall a bit closer to 50% after the 1.1.1 update, but this might just reflect a little more drainage due to louder volume levels.
If you're in an area of marginal coverage then the iPhone will 'seek' the network and this appears to discharge the battery much more quickly. Seeking could also cause more radio interference. A low to dead battery in the morning might be explained due to an AT&T outage during the night perhaps.
I routinely plug my iPhone in at bedside (I use a custom ring-tone as a wake-up alarm). That way everyday I start with a full charge.

I noticed after the 1.1.1 upgrade my iphone battery would wear down much faster. Last week my iphone finally started to give up the ghost. It would totally lose a full charge overnight. I called Apple and they sent me a new iPhone. They did a remarkable job with the exchange and customer service, so what can you expect we are early adopters. Problems are bound to happen, but I am happy to pay that price to have an iPhone now and be the envy of my friends.
Posted by Mike | October 30, 2007 10:22 PM
I have also had the same problem with shorter battery life and warmer operation. I have narrowed the problem down to e-mail. If I turn off automatic checking of e-mail accounts and never go into e-mail, battery life is normal. When I start doing things with e-mail, chances are good that at some point, the battery will start to drain.
I hope this comment helps solve the problem.

I remember reading that in firmware version 1.1.1 the power to the WiFi had been increased to achieve faster download speed for the iTunes wireless store. Perhaps it may be part of the problem.
Posted by Ledario | October 30, 2007 11:09 PM
Immediately after upgrading to the latest software my phone's battery life tanked to the point that I could only get 5 hours of life out of it, so charged and ready to go at 7 AM and dead by noon. I took my phone back to Apple and they gave me a new phone. Yeah! Haven't had the problem since, but I suspect Apple's adding the iTunes WiFi store application to the iPhone is a culprit. I wish I could get rid of it completely as I will not buy songs from iTunes.
Posted by Kiki | October 30, 2007 11:48 PM
Since 1.1.1, my battery does not charge completely (even after 8 hours) and my car charger doesn't help any. Even very little usage causes it to crap out early. Some days, it drains extremely fast. I have also noticed the phone to get warmer than it has in the past. Did not have any problems with this before. No wifi problems. I am taking it back to Apple since this sporatic performance and poor battery charging ability is unacceptable.
Posted by Jim Wright | October 31, 2007 12:18 AM
I've had all three problems: lowered battery life, failure to recognize networks, heating. I can allieviate heat by turning Wi-Fi off.
Posted by Etienne Navir | October 31, 2007 1:06 AM
I thought I was the only one who noticed some odd changes with 1.1.1. Apparently not. I used to be able to go all day, normal usage, and barely register a "blip" on the battery level. I could easily go a few days before charging. (I rarely use WiFi). Ever since 1.1.1 I notice a significant drain on battery. I can still make it through a day, but with heavy usage, I start getting nervous. I know that once it's down to the halfway point, it's a fast slippery slope to RED levels!
The main thing I noticed after 1.1.1 is that I used to have 5-bar signal strength nearly all the time...now it seems like I'm frequently in the 2-3 bar range...Is my radio somehow weaker? Or is the signal meter more accurate?

Yes - I have this issue. What worked for me to make it better was to make sure that Mail was not set to auto-check. After that, it is much better, but not great.

definitely runs warmer especially when i am using safari. no wi-fi problems
Posted by Thomas Miller | October 31, 2007 2:16 AM
I have had problems with bettery life and overheating since the day that I updated to 1.1.1. I haven't pursued it much besides posting it on the Apple Support forums, which resulted in nothing.
Posted by Ryan | October 31, 2007 4:49 AM
I too noticed a very short battery life with the 1.1.1 update, but have since had to restore my iPhone (a couple of times, actually). Doing so must have fixed the issue somehow, as it always seems to have plenty of power these days.
Posted by Nick Combs | October 31, 2007 5:07 AM
Wow, I'm glad to hear I'm not going crazy (at least not from this anyways!)
I noticed my phone was MUCH warmer (dare I say hot) to the touch and that the battery seemed to be draining MUCH faster than before. All along I've been telling myself "Self, you were all excited about the phone before so you just didn't notice it then". Now I know it's not just me. Thank you!!
Now, err, Apple? Fix please??
(Yeah, right... like they read this....)

I have noticed a decrease in battery life as well since installing 1.1.1. Sounds like some of you have gone to apple and received a new phone because of this issue. Should I be doing the same or will 1.1.2 correct this issue since it is likely to be a software issue.
Posted by Erik | October 31, 2007 10:27 AM
I have noticed the same symptoms. Wi-Fi has been spotty after the update, even in my home where it had been strong before. Battery life has not seemed as strong.
Posted by bemused | October 31, 2007 11:17 AM
Yes! I thought I was just overusing it, but I average only about 2 hours of use per day. My phone gets increasingly hotter, I get a LOT of static through the headphone port playing the iPod in my Jeep via my MP3 port. Forget about using the Belkin car charger now also, the phone actually gets screaming hot. Only since 1.1.1
*edit*
Actually, just went and grabbed my phone and for the first time since I've had it, the battery died. I haven't used it for more than 15 minutes today.
Posted by Chef | October 31, 2007 12:49 PM
I've noticed the decrease in battery life, but my real problem is with the WiFi. I will be at home and on my WiFi there. But when I get to the office where we have WiFi, the phone doesn't pick up the network. When I look at the settings, the WiFi is turned off. I didn't turn it off – the phone has a mind of its own. Irritating.
Posted by Elizabeth | October 31, 2007 12:51 PM
Yes since installing 1.1.1 I have noticed a decrease in Battery and it has been getting warmer than it did. Especially after extended surfing. And I have had problems connecting to networks on occasion.
Posted by Eric | October 31, 2007 2:19 PM
My dad's iPhone would say that it is out of juice with in one hour, but if he resets the phone, it immediately says it is full and lasts the usual life span. I had to reinstall 1.1.1 twice on my iPhone to get edge to work.
Posted by Black Venom | October 31, 2007 8:28 PM
I have noticed that my IPhone was warmer than normal. I thought this was because I kept it plugged in while I am at home, but then noticed that it was always warm. This was all after the 1.1.1 install. Thanks for the insight on the battery. I will have to pay more attention to my batter life now that it is installed.
Posted by Thom | November 1, 2007 1:41 AM
Didn't notice any issue until I turned Bluetooth on only momentarily today. Within 5 hours the batery was completely dead even though I never touched the phone.
Posted by Pat | November 1, 2007 3:06 AM
Question: is this problem plaguing both ihacked and legit users on 1.1.1?
Posted by Simon4rings | November 1, 2007 10:17 AM
I actually noticed this for the first time yesterday - the phone was fully charged in the morning, and out of juice by 1.
I am speculating that in my case, at least, that it may be related to having a paused video. I rarely watch video on it, but on Wednesday I was doing so and paused it, then just shut the phone off. I noticed there was a "Play" icon (the small triangle) in the status bar, however, which I don't recall seeing (or at least didn't notice) before 1.1.1. Then the battery sucked completely dry in about 7 or 8 hours - which, oddly, seems to be about the expected life when watching videos as I recall. The phone was also very warm during this time - I actually took it out of my pocket because of that, which led to my noticing that it was dead.
I wonder if the phone is doing something to keep the video ready to play that causes it to behave (and use battery) as though you are actually watching video?
So far today, no play icon, and the phone seems normal in terms of both heat and charge.
May not be what it is for everyone, but just another potential data point.

I'm still on the first version and I have a battery problem. Just last night, my battery was just about full. So I go on with my life for about 5 hours without touching the phone, come back to it and can't even turn it on. The battery is completely dead. Why? I didn't touch my phone at all and I had over 50% of a charge before. I only charge it once a day overnight since I don't use it much and never had the problem before.
Recent changes, just added google imap and increase the brightness a little. Should I take it back to the store and do they replace it for free?
Posted by Adrian | November 1, 2007 5:17 PM
I upgraded from 1.0.2 (jailbroke) to 1.1.1 a couple nights ago. I jailbroke it shortly thereafter.
I immediately started noticing my battery drain (almost sit and watch it felt like). I was using my apple bluetooth headset more, mostly because I could see the battery power in the status bar.
Before I updated, I charged once a night. Over the past 2 days, I have to charge it routinely throughout the day.
Really sucks.
Posted by Someone | November 1, 2007 7:28 PM
I had already replaced my iPhone once by going through Apple Care but even the new iPhone I have now is exhibiting the same problem. I charge it every night (as I'm assuming most of us do) and I use it probably for 30 minutes for making phone calls and a scattered 20 minutes of Internet over WiFi. By the evening, iPhone shows "10% Battery remaining" warning. This is what my usage looks like right now:
Usage: 1 Hour, 13 minutes
Standby: 10 Hours, 30 minutes
I don't do a lot of EDGE browsing. I have a bluetooth headset paired with my iPhone and have WiFi turned on. I have no EQ turned on in the iPod (which I learnt that uses a lot of battery) and I don't listen to music during a normal work day.
I somehow feel this is all due to the 1.1.1 firmware. It wasn't this bad before I upgraded my iPhone to 1.1.1. Some days my iPhone goes from fully charged (or 90% charged) to no charge within an hour or so. And this is the second iPhone that I'm going through after complaining of the same issue and getting a replacement iPhone.
Whatever is wrong with the firmware, its gotta be fixed soon. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone. But if it doesn't hold charge over a work day, it's of no value to me as a brick.
Posted by Bala | November 1, 2007 7:52 PM
I also have noticed that I keep having to
plug in the charger when in the car traveling.
If you surf the Internet much, the Batt goes fast.
And the IPhone does run warmer...even to the
point of feeling hot....at times...
It also seems slower sending e-mail's out...
Posted by KeithC | November 2, 2007 9:08 AM
i noticed this issue too. I thougt it was my bluetooth headset but i turned it off for a few days and same issue. The life is not as bad as some are reporting though. Mine lasts all day but i charge it every night now though as it goes down to about 30% I would usually charge it every other day.

Yes, I have had problems with my battery life. Without much protest the Apple store replaced my iPhone, but still have the same short battery life issues. Very frusterating to not be able to get through a day of use whereas my Blackberry would last almost two days with heavy usage.

I first noticed the problem on a recent trip to Table Rock State Park in South Carolina. We were out of cell phone range in most of the park and were not able to connect until we reached the Table Rock summit. Customers of other service providers noted a similar battery problem and were told that it was the result of their phone constantly seeking a non-existen Wi-Fi connection. Once Wi-Fi was turned off, there was no further battery problem.
Posted by Casey O'Connor | November 5, 2007 8:48 AM
I have notice a significant reduction in battery life, in my case it is not related to WiFi because I very rarely use it. The standby time has been reduced to 1/3 of what it used to be, this is beginning to be a real problem.
Posted by Jim Makar | November 5, 2007 8:52 AM
Iphone does get hot after use and charging, and battery life seems considerably diminished.
Poor ATT connection at my home.
Posted by Alvin Sher | November 5, 2007 8:53 AM
I ws about to upgrade my iPHONE to 1.1.1 when i read about the significant fix for the said version. "wifi connectivity", i knew that patching wifi, antenna or chip will eat up battery, happens not only to a phone but same with the laptops wifi. I think wifi is better in 1.1.1, but if battery is going to eat up all the resources, i must say i'm good in 1.0.2.
Posted by Rowin | November 5, 2007 8:56 AM
I have the 1.1.1 update, and didn't know about the battery problem until I read the article in MacWorld iPhone News. I haven't performed any hacks, downloads, or installs. I use a Motorola Bluetooth wireless earphone for the telephone function, and Senheiser headphones for the iPod function.
I haven't noticed any change in battery life other than the reasonably significant difference when the WiFi is enabled. This is consistent throughout the firmware upgrades.
This is a 4gig model that was purchased the first day of sales, in Connecticut. I hope this helps anyone who is investigating the phenomenon.
Posted by JoeWix | November 5, 2007 8:58 AM
I noticed. At first I thought it was from excessive use since I constantly use my iPhone for business and personal applications. But a friend of mine has complained about his battery and his iPhone useage is half of mine. I'm actually glad for this article as I didn't know what was going on. I was beginning to angrily resign myself to the fact that I was in for a battery replacement after only four months. I am now hopeful for a software fix.
Posted by Kennard Yamada | November 5, 2007 9:20 AM
Yes, I too noticed shorter battery life. Not the overnight type of drainage as noted in other posts, but no where near what I was getting prior to the update. What I notice more frequently, is the phone getting very warm during usage after this update.
Posted by Jeff Bucholtz | November 5, 2007 9:30 AM
Additionally, to my previous post, wi-fi is now an issue after the 1.1.1 update. Using my connection at home is no problem, but public wi-fi spots always leave me with the same error message(s) - can't connect to server, can't retrieve mail and so it goes...
Posted by Jeff Bucholtz | November 5, 2007 9:35 AM
You are right on the money. My iphone started getting very hot on the top part of the phone and losing a charge in a half a day. I tried several resets to no avail. Then I searched and found a thought that the auto setting for email was getting stuck in a loop. Since turning the auto mail off, it no longer gets ho and the batter doesn't discharg quickly.
Posted by Richard | November 5, 2007 9:37 AM
After the update I had real bad problems with battery life. I would go to bed with a full charge and wake up to nothing.
I took it to the Apple store and they replaced the phone. It has happened once with the new phone, but otherwise it's been fine.
Posted by Spencer | November 5, 2007 9:41 AM
After installing the update I noticed significant reduction in battery life. I now must charge my phone every evening. I've had several occasions when the phone went dead before the day was over. I bought a car charger since I can't be sure my phone will last into the evening hours. This is a real problem since I rely so heavily on mobile capabilities. Often times my day begins a 5 a.m. and doesn't end until 10:30 p.m. It's a problem when the phone won't stay charged that long.

I just updated a couple days ago to 1.1.1 update and I'm now encountering the same battery problems that everyone appears to be having. One minutes I'm have a fully charged battery and a couple hours later (with iphone off) my battery is almost dead but my WiFi is not connected.
Posted by Jeffrey | November 5, 2007 9:50 AM
I have noticed several 'changes' since the 1.1.1. Yes, battery life seems shorter, but also charging appears to be taking longer.
I also had my home wifi 'crash'. First time since I've set it up and was right after using an iPhone. Had to restart (power up/down) to get the wifi back up.
My iPhone has also 'hung up' or 'frozen up' several times since the 1.1.1 update. Wasn't doing that before. I can't even just shut it off, I have to hold both buttons and do a restart.
I've had two iPhones (wife and mine) since 6:10 pm on the opening day, something is certainly amiss with this last update.
Posted by Rob | November 5, 2007 10:00 AM
No problems noticed with my iPhone since 1.1.1 upgrade. I am in the habit of turning off WiFi all the time and only turning it on when I need it, which is not often. That seems to prolong battery charge.
I get 2-3 days of use before needing a charge and then it is normally 30%+ I also plug in the iPhone to a power adapter every other day as i don't need full sync that often.
I did notice a full discharge for the first time this past saturday however since 1.1.1 which seemed odd. I guess overall battery discharge seems a bit faster than before.

Same "exhaustion" problem with my iPhone. Battery seems to run down more quickly since the upgrade.

What a coincidence! I have recently noticed a serious diminution in battery life and a few days later here comes the story on Macworld. Count me among the affected.
Posted by DOUG WALKER | November 5, 2007 10:44 AM
My iPhone battery life has been shortened -
I have noticed that my iPhone calls out for a drink of juice at least TWICE a day - sometimes without warning.
I'm a heavy user as I (we) manage our automotive computer diagnostic repair shop using "my" iPhone. With over 3000 contacts and hundreds of appointments in the calendar I sync four to five times a day. The iPhone also uploads all the pictures we take while documenting the customers' cars.
All the outbound calls are from the iPhone and the quick checks made on the internet become the job of Safari. The iPhone is USED.
Maps is called up when directing lost customers to the shop and to find the occasional obscure vender. SMS messages are sent and retrieved because some of our clients would rather it be that way.
I do a "soft boot" after every sync and try to keep the picture storage to a minimum.
But many times of late the iPhone will "quit" (reboot on its own) with the battery showing red. I do NOT use wi-fi, rather I rely on EDGE (it works just fine) all in an effort to increase battery life.
My pants pockets now contain the USB cable, the 12VDC charger and 110VAC unit that came with the iPhone for emergency fill ups.
NO HACKS have ever been introduced to this iPhone!
H E L P - my load is too much with all this extra gear I'm carrying.

Since I work out of my home, I don't use my phone much and each night I plug in for recharge the battery is practically solid green. Suddenly, each night I notice it's only an eigth full. Then while sitting at a morning dentist appointment I thought I would kill time by doing a bit of surfing - my phone went dead. No battery life. Something as gone terribly wrong. Not to mention when I do use my iPhone, it gets hot in a hurry.
Posted by Mark | November 5, 2007 10:54 AM
My battery life appears to be OK after the update, with EDGE browsing sucking battery power the most. I've noticed that my iphone gets warm after about 15-20min of browsing. I've also noticed that it has had more difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi networks.

On Saturday night, I couldn't get a signal. My home network didn't show, even when I placed the iPhone on top of the router. I used the computer "magic pill," and turned it off, waited 10 seconds, and turned it back on. WiFi was restored, but my battery was almost dead, even though it had been charging all day. You don't know how much better I feel knowing that all of you are having problems too. Not that I wish anything bad on any of you, but misery loves company! ;)

I had the heating up issue + the Short battery life issue---I followed the Link from Poster #4 Trent--to IPhone Atlas--I used their method to restore my IPhone--eliminating the previous updates and then restoring the Iphone. This worked for me--No more heating up and battery life is much improved.

I likewise have seen a dramatic decrease in my iPhone's battery life since 1.1.1. One day last week it drained completely over a 6-hour period; I had talked on it for about ten minutes, but had not used Safari or iPod functions. However, in Mail, I had IMAP accounts set up for my .Mac, Exchange (through Synchronica), and GMail accounts, as well as Yahoo Mail. I deleted all but the two most essential, the .Mac (main personal acct) and the Exchange acct (work). The battery life improved quite a bit (but still worse than before 1.1.1). I guess that the constant polling of all of those IMAP accounts took a toll... Any other ideas for improving this would be appreciated.

I seem to be in the minority here. I've not noticed any reduction in battery life with the update. It is rare to see the battery below 50% at the end of the day. But I'm not sure I've ever gotten two days out of a single charge.
One thing I've been doing since very early on, is to plug it in and power it off at night. I do this because I started noticing apps behaving oddly, and cycling power fixed the problems. Now I don't seem to have these issues because the iPhone is "starting fresh" every day.
Another thing I do is the run my iphone until it "dies" about once a month. I figure this helps keep the battery "conditioned" although I realize that is not supposed to be necessary with this type of battery.

I noticed the same issue with my iPhone, but I think I found the problem with mine. I noticed that when I watched a YouTube video my iTunes would start playing. Left unchecked it would drain my battery super quick. So, after watching a YouTube video I'll notice the 'play' indicator at the top of the phone display. I simply go to iTunes, press the play button, then pause it and the 'play' indicator goes away and my battery level no longer has premature discharge. That's my story and my solution.

Same here. Noticed that battery life was not the same as before as well. As far as, felling warm, was when I fully charged my iPhone. Does anybody have that problem too?

I too have had my battery drain unexpectedly since the 1.1.1 update. This became a major problem last week when I used it as an alarm clock while traveling. My iphone was 80% charged when I went to bed around 11:00. I MISSED a meeting the next morning because the alarm did not go off; the battery was completely dead. I couldn't believe it. Now I can't trust it as an alarm clock!!
I should mention that I consistently do all the right things to maintain excellent battery life, such as turning off Wi-Fi when I am not using it; keeping the brightness at a reasonable setting and so on.

I've been having the same problem: short battery life after charging overnight, and only limited use during the day. I also noticed it takes longer to charge: after I first got it and calibrated the battery, it would take a little over 3 hrs to reach a complete charge. Now, it takes almost 5 1/2 hrs to reach a full charge.

I am having battery issues but in addition, my bluetooth is not working well with my car integration any common problems?

And I thought it was only happening to me! In the last few weeks, my iPhone has been running low on power and getting hot. It even ran completely out in a single day of less-than-average use. It appears to me to be related to WiFi when WiFi access may not be available. Apple--please resolve this!

Since purchase on 7/2 I found the iPhone remarkable in battery life, despite complaints seen online. Then with the 1.1.1 update, no more great battery life. With any use at all (couple of 10 min calls per day) the battery is usually depleted by 50% leaving me little battery for my 1 hour commute each way for podcasts, videos and music.
Never mind emails.

My battery life is definitely shorter. I barely used the phone the other day, and the battery was completely drained! Also, the screen actually froze on me yesterday. I think it's time to go back to the Apple store.

Hello, I have noticed a significant battery drain. I can now say that it was since the 1.1.1 update. Very short battery life, also my mail say's it cannot connect to server, but I'm receiving the mail anyway, and I noticed a lot of repeat email after I delete them. Can we get another update to fix this?

I am a very heavy user, and rely on the iPhone for business and home use. Since the upgrade to 1.1.1, I've noticed marked battery life shortage. Phone absolutely runs warmer. Charging function seems to be even warmer.
Please Apple...make a fix for this! I own two 4 gig iPhones. No hacks on either of them. One is still at the old system, as I wanted to minimize the risk if any issues arose from upgrade. The phone running the old system has much longer battery life.
Both phones are 4 gig, and were purchased same day from Apple online. Hopefully this is a fixable thing from Apple upgrade?

I have noticed the top part of my phone getting real hot when using the internet both on wiFi and edge. Also I have been noticing a sharp decrease in battery life in general.

No problem w. 1.1.1 .... usually charge every 2-3 days. Occas. I notice a big drop in battery 'remaining' for no apparent reason .. usually from 75% down to 25% in 8 hr ... whereas it usually only drops 20% or so per day, unless I'm doing a lot of browsiing...

I have this same issue. Hot phone, bad reception or no reception of WiFi, stuck in Edge, when WiFi is available. I restored and downloaded the new Firmware. I tried all the tricks to fix this issue. My reality is that turning anything that is a feature off on a phone that is supposed to be feature rich is not acceptable. I have several email accounts syncing with this phone, and I bought it so that I could do this. Asking the consumer to shutdown functionality because you have crappy software is not the answer here. Apple needs to fix it, today. I can't endorse this product, and I have been showing everyone it now for the past few months. I paid the 6 bills for it, because I trusted Apple. Wow, are they pushing their luck with me. This Micro-stylish that they are pulling here.
