Sneak a peek at iPhone 1.1.1 features
We know it’s coming, hanging over our heads like an oncoming thunderstorm. The iPhone’s first major software update is on its way this month, bringing spiffy new features like the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. But what other advantages will it confer upon the iPhone-using masses?
Apparently some of the phones demonstrated at this morning’s event in London were running the new software, suggesting that its release is imminent. Engadget snapped some pictures, including one which shows off a preference setting for what happens when you double-click the iPhone’s home button. Right now, of course, it’ll simply take you home. But in the new firmware, you’ll also have the option to display the iPod controls (à la the iPod touch) or take you to your phone favorites (I think I can hear several of my colleagues jumping for joy).
Or, if you’re a traditionalist, it can continue to take you just back to the home screen. There’s also an option to have it bring up the iPod controls when you’re actively playing music.
There’s some other info hinted at in the shots as well. For example, it appears that the 1.1.1 firmware will support both closed captions on video and the ability to output to a TV (perhaps those store listings weren’t typos, but just a case of jumping the gun). And, of course, there’s support for International keyboard settings, similar we’d guess to that on the touch.
What other wonders does the new iPhone firmware hold? We won’t know until it drops, but I’m still jonesing for the iTunes Wi-Fi Store. That’s taking impulse purchases to a whole new level.

How about the option to diasble the EDGE network while roaming? That's the one I'm looking forward to the most.

You can disable EDGE by locking the SIM card. Not ideal, however, because it also blocks the use of the phone and requires a reboot. A simple on-off setting like the one for wi-fi would be ideal.

According to iPhone Atlas, there is an option to disable EDGE roaming. I'm also looking forward to that for my next trip to Vancouver.

Sorry, I'm being dense - disabling EDGE is just to save some money on international networks, right?

i thought is was silly to not have the option to turn off edge roaming in the first place, but here it is in the latest update! this is a good thing.

wide screen keyboard for all apps!!!

How about something so trivial as the Calendar support tasks. Come on, with all the "cool" stuff in the iPhone, you would think something so mundane as an electronic Task List would be a snap.

PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE give us cut-and-paste!!

What about Flash. We need to have Flash support on the iPhone for so many reasons!

task app in the calendar?!?! Sign me up
Horizontal keyboard for all apps?!?! As long as it gives me my current line of typing. I hate having yo scroll in large content blocks.
I'd love to see a text edit similar to words grammar correction software. That way I can click and hold and choose my typo fixes over long sentences.
I could use tabbed list in notes for writing real outlines.
itunes wifi isnt a deal breaker for me, but its coming.

The feature I'd like the most is to be able to view multiple email accounts at the same time, like I can on Mac Mail. Having to manually switch between several accounts just to check your new mail is a royal pain. . . .

How about a spell check or voice dialing?? I love my iPhone and wouldn't trade it for anything, but those two features would be REALLY NICE!!

YES!! Copy/Cut and Paste!!!

How about putting that recently acquired ActiveSync license to good use and give us full Exchange capabilities? Not that I miss it but I'd like to be able to send and receive email in my company's Exchange system as well as keep my Calendar up-to-date. That alone would be worth a lot Apple. Hell, I'd even pay a small fee (ala 802.11n $2.00 fee for MacBooks).
Also, why not announce some Apple developed or sanctioned apps for the iPhone? Not for nothing Mr. Jobs, but two apps I need desperately that I would only buy if they were either Apple apps or Apple authorized apps are a Personal Finance program that syncs with Quicken and a good Password/Account details database program. Start selling apps already please.

Has anyone thought of this...
How about bringing out a version of “graffiti” and allowing users to write with their finger tip(s). Or, for that matter, how about drawing/painting programs... Hmm, maybe call it “Finger Paints”.
Oh, and since the iphone is suppose to be a iPod killer or just a complement, how about modifying the headphone jack so users can use ANY headphones! Wow, it would be nice to just carry the iphone and connect that to my car’s mp3 player (via headphone jack!!!) to play music instead of having to carry my iPod too. ( For a short car ride the iphone would be great and for those road trips, then you pull out the iPod...).
And if I have to use an adapter for the iphone’s headphone jack, well I guess I should have stayed with my Treo650!!! At least the Treo will cut & paste... Oh, and everything else I mentioned above...
Yeah, I was a bit disappointed after I get the iPhone... :-(
It has the potential to be so much more!

Oh, and a friggin' search feature.

What I need is a Calendar alarm system that WORKS! We should be able to make the alarm sound anything we want, and also have it reoccuring at a time we can set. 5 Min, 15 Min, never, etc. THATS would be HUGE and sooo easy to do! Once I miss that first little beep, I am screwed! Come on, everyone can use that feature!

Am I the only person who wants to be able to turn my iPhone sideways and get the bigger keyboard when I'm in Mail?? I thought this would be a biggie on everyone's list!
