iTunes 7.4 kills iToner ringtones
If, like me, you watched yesterday’s Apple presentation and, when Steve Jobs announced custom ringtones from the iTunes Store, thought “Interesting, but I’ll continue to use Ambrosia Software’s $15 iToner to create my own” you’re in for a rude surprise when you next sync your iPhone with iTunes 7.4.
Why? After doing so, custom ringtones apparently disappear from the phone.
Before breaking out the pitchforks and torches, please understand that this appears to be an unwelcome side-effect of the way iTunes goes about its business rather than an attempt to target iToner or other methods for installing custom ringtones. I suggest this because, after the sync, the ringtones remain on the iPhone. If you have Terminal/sftp access to your phone because you’re hacked it, you’ll find them here:
/private/var/root/Media/iTunes_Control/Ringtones
What appears to happen is that as iTunes syncs it accesses an index of its “approved” ringtones (this index would include the stock ringtones as well as any you’ve purchased from the iTunes Store) and makes sure that the ringtones on that list appear on the iPhone after the sync. Any ringtones that aren’t part of the index are ignored rather than erased from the phone.
For now, the workaround is to sync the iPhone, fire up iToner, and reinstall your custom ringtones. After doing so, your iToner ringtones will be back in place.
My very best guess is that Ambrosia is already hard at work on the problem and will make an updated version of iToner available in the near future.

Yep, they know about it and are working on a fix as I type this. I'll probably wait to update iTunes until iToner is updated first.

While iTunes initially wiped out my custom ringtones, new tones loaded with iBrickr remain after a sync (with “Sync Ringtones” unchecked).

Yes, they know about it and suggested to hold off on the iTunes upgrade until their fix is out. You've got to give Ambrosia credit for handling this right: their tech support picked up the phone and answered the question.

I've yet to find a song on iTunes or in my personal collection that can be turned into ringtone yet. Even the example on the apple site can't be made into a ringtone yet. Maybe this feature isn't live right now?

Steve said the ringtone part of iTunes will not be activated until next week.
I downloaded iTunes 4.3 this morning. I connected my iPhone and saw a quick "sync" happening. I have iTunes set to not automatically sync. Now this quick sync wiped out all my iToner ringtones.
So, you don't even have to do a sync. All you have to do is connect your iPhone and start iTunes.

Is anyone else having general sync issues with 7.4..? It will sync music OK, but if I have anything on the 'Info' tab checked, it just sits there with the stripey bar, not actually doing anything. I've tried restarting the iphone and that didn't help...

What really chaps my butt is the fact that Apple's Ringtone Maker can not be used with your own personal CD's that you have ripped into iTunes. On top of that, Apple is going to charge us an additional .99 cents for a song that you already own or are going to own. Apple lets us down again, in favor of making more money off us. Thank goodness that iToner has come to save the day. The newest version of iTunes only eraces your iToner ringtones if you have the sync options selected. Once you disable this option you should be ok as long as you do not want any of Apple's Ringtones.

Sorry Aerwin, but it's not so. Even if you disable the option, it erases any ringtones which you set via iToner.
While it's true you can use iToner to reapply the ringtones, if you have 20 or 30 contacts with custom ringtones and have to reapply them every time you sync, it gets really old, really fast.

Well, not an issue anymore. Ambrosia Software released iToner 1.0.1 which fixes the software so that it works with iTunes 7.4.
Problem solved!

I stand corrected, Paul you are correct. Thank goodness Ambrosia Software realeased iToner 1.0.1 or I would be manual changing all my contanct ringtones as Paul indicated. Way to go Ambrosia!!

What is going on? I have 3 songs available for ringtones? I thought there was 500,000 floating around out there?
I actually don't mind paying the label/artist/owner of a song extra for ringtone use. I think it's actually fair. The music makers of the world should be compensated because the digital revolution has give them the shaft.
Also I don't want to get caught in the middle of Apple and Ambrosia's war. Apple will win eventually and iToner will not work.
But why can't I find more songs????????
Posted by Dave D. | September 13, 2007 4:35 PM
Two points. 1. Why is it fair for Apple to charge me for a ringtone of music I have already paid for? The artist was already compensated. 2. Why can't I make my own ringtone? I am a hack musician and have made a few mp3's. That artist deserves no compensation, believe me.
Naw, Apple's decision to do this is a blantant money grab. Reminds me of why Apple lost the PC wars. Always had the better product, but never figured out the marketplace.
Finally, from what I read, iToner still does not work as of Jan 26. When it does, I will be happy to buy it, and will convert mp3's to ringtones without guilt.
