Despite questions about whether or not the process works, it seems that the folks at iPhoneSIMfree have finally made their software available for sale. While you can’t buy directly from them, they are working with resellers in several countries to make the process available to end users. US customers can spend $99 to have their phone unlocked; the process is also available at present in Australia, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. It’s worth noting, however, that the fulfillment process (i.e., the actual unlocking) isn’t live yet, so you may want to save your pennies until verifiable reports start coming in.
Gizmodo is cautioning people to wait until the next iPhone software update comes along before trying the unlock process, since it’s not known if Apple will try to prevent it in some way. We don’t know when exactly that will be, but Jobs has promised one for later this month, which will roll out support for the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.
