iPhone video out forthcoming?

Interesting quirk on the Apple store: both the Apple Component AV Cable and Apple Composite AV cable for the new generation of iPods also list themselves as iPhone compatible.

Is this a miscategorization of Apple’s product database, or a suggestion that the iPhone is capable of video out, perhaps pending a software update? I bought my iPhone assuming it couldn’t do video out, but it would be pretty awesome if it turned out that it could. Especially if the iPhone’s little brother, the iPod touch, can do it.

Why is this so shocking? The iPhone is an iPod as well, not to mention it is listed right there as a compatible device.

Because from the beginning, video out has not been among the list of the iPhone's specs. It's never been a part of the package and Apple has never talked about it as being video-out capable.

And when people tried to use the iPhone in previous iPod video docks, the video has not worked.

See this Gizmodo article from a month ago:

I guess it will be a matter of hours or days until someone get the cable and test it out...
Personally I will not be surprise that the iPhone has that feature built-in and Apple kindly forgot to mention it. They may have some other tricks in their sleeves that can be waiting the right moment to be announced.
In fact I will not be surprised that all iPhone have that feature for video out. Look at the keynote, it will seems odd for Apple to have built only a few prototype just for the keynote... what happen if for any reason such special model stop working ? If all iPhone have the feature then all iPhone can be used for the keynote. I don't think Apple & Steve will take such a risk to have some failure duirng the keynote.

See the Note. It states that component video will work only for iPod nano, classic, and touch. The accessory will work for the iPhone, but only to connect it to your stereo...

Indeed the componenet video page has that note, but the composite video cord page has no such disclaimer.

The iPhone icon has been removed from the compatibility list on both product pages.

The new iPod touch has a Video Setting that allows some configuration changes for handling video out. The iPhone does not, at the moment.

Check out this picture from Engadget of the European O2 iphone - clearly has Video Out (on system 1.1.1) ... I hope this is coming in a firmware upgrade.

I was told by an iStore employee that they are working on it, but there is a heat issue with the video out feature. They don't want melting iphones basically.

My iPhone now has NTSC and PAL output options at the bottom of the iPod settings screen. Also has TV on/off setting on the same page. Anybody tried these with a video capable iPod dock yet?

Of course the iPhone has video out capability. The software already exists; it was demonstrated during the iphone press conference. It actually has real- time mirrored screen video-out capability. During the Demo it was projected on a large screen using component cables. The software hasn't been released yet for a number of reasons. One is the concern with heat dissipation issues after long (hours) of usage. Another is overuse of bandwidth for internet surfing where there iss no available wifi coverage.
