iPhone version 1.1.1 has beamed down from the Internets

iphone1.1.1.jpgDoes the date September 27th hold any significance to you? For me, it’s the birthday of my grandmother, one of my cousins, and my best friend from college (happy birthday, guys!). And now it’s the day that Apple dropped the first featureful software update for the iPhone, version 1.1.1.

Just last week, there was some news on what features we might expect in the update, which weighs in at a hefty 152MB, and it sounds like all of those are in play, and a handful of others have been added as well. I’m installing the new package as we speak, taking my risks with the chances that it might “irreparably damage” my iPhone (though I haven’t attempted to unlock my phone, I have installed many a third party application on it). The “Updating Firmware” bar is chugging away as I type this, but so far it hasn’t complained about the presence of Nullriver’s Installer.app.

We’ll have more on the new features and whether we’ve still got compatibility with third-party apps in a bit. For more info, check over at the mothership.

Update: While installing 1.1.1 did not complain about Installer.app being present, when I started it up, Installer had disappeared. Trying to reinstall it via AppTapp put the phone into recovery mode, forcing me to restore the iPhone software via iTunes.

Update 2: Version 1.1.1 appears to also disable Ambrosia’s iToner custom ringtone app, and I’ve finally lost the ringtones from the iTunes workaround as well. Looks like only Apple-sanctioned ringtones for now.

Dan, did the other 3rd party apps you'd installed with Installer disappear as well?

@Roy I uninstalled as many of them as possible, hoping it would smooth the update procedure, but I presume that they all would have been removed anyway. Let me see if I can find some more info on that.

It seems befitting that I read about this update on my iPhone via newsgator. ;-)

Probably the update wipes all the third party apps out anyway so ui-nstalling them first may not be necessary. Can you confirm this? I sorta think it's not worth installing this update if we have to loose all the great third paryt native applications!

Warning!

The new update required a restore without warning! Lost all my notes and photos forever! My phone was not, has not ever been or will ever be hacked. Pretty tacky of Apple to require a restore without warning.

If this is how they handle the iPhone update, what will happen with OS X in October? I think I will wait for awhile before buying OS X and get smart and not update with so much trust in the future.

You have been warned!

Mark

If you like your 3rd party apps...Don't install this update.

Wait for the fine folks at nullriver to find a way around this update. It's completely not worth losing all your 3rd party apps which make the phone cool.

No need to uninstall 3rd party apps..update will just wipe them out.

I just did the upgrade and didn't lose anything on my phone (photos, notes, ringtone settings etc).

So Mark's experience (above) is not normal.

The upgrade didn't affect my iToner installed ringtones. They are still there and still working.

I have a box stock iPhone, no hacks or 3rd party stuff. Just installed 1.1.1 and everything is cool, I still have my notes, photos, etc.

Also worth nothing is a considerably serious bug introduced, though it is not across the board on all phones. A good number of users on www.iRovr.com have reported Safari crashing after sending email initiated by a mailto link. This is particularly disturbing considering the site relies on email for interaction.

My phone does not exhibit this behavior. My wife's does. We have the same model and firmware.

I hope Apple takes this seriously and posts a hotfix sooner than later.

Apple also fixed a little problem where the press and position your cursor in html form textarea fields were not working. It works fine now.

I installed the update on my iPhone with Installer.App on it, but I didn't unlock my iPhone. I had no problems at all with the update, however I lost the abilty to install those 3rd party apps. I'm not even going to try to re-install it, rather I'll wait for some kind of upgrade or announcement from the developer.

I'm with AT&T, had AppTapp installed with many programs, NES, GPS, lots...I figured they would be lostwith the update but was curious if my SSH would still be available for connection through Transmit. I had changed the root password from dottie to something else...don't know if that mattered. The update went smooth, phone restarted and as expected, all the apps were gone leaving it in a "like new" state but my songs and contacts etc...were still there. The only thing left from before was some wallpaper i had put in the wallpaper folder..can only see it at sign in screen. I tried Transmit and could not connect. Now for the dumb part. i saw the AppTapp installer on my computer and thought "what could be the harm in trying?"....I clicked install and chose 1.0.2. The install started and then hung....the phone was bricked....I tried to do a reinstall with iTunes and it said it could not be done. What did I do? Try and try again. The phone would not do anything except display a picture of a cord pluggin into iTunes. The fourth time I ran the reinstall it went okay and asked if I wanted to use one of the backups from itunes....I said yes and it started up and activated and my songs and contacts were intact. I wish I hadn't done it. I LOVED my programs on the phone and felt like I had the coolest ever portable BASH shell devise ever. now I have the same phone as martha stewart again. Exact same. I am donating some $$ to the iphone dev team now because they make me happy.
Cheers!

There seems to be conflicting information here. James indicates that he had custom applications installed and then managed to get the phone to version 1.1.1 without completely bricking the phone. Then even after trying to apply AppTapp (Installer) and corrupting the phone, he was able to resurrect the phone. Others above mentioned that they only installed a custom ring tone or otherwise and the update to 1.1.1 irreparably bricked the phone.

Which is it?

We have a corporate iPhone pilot program running and to activate the phones on our corporate AT&T plan (we have thousands of blackberries and otherwise), we were forced to use iActivator. The last thing that I want to see is our CIO and all of his subordinates who are on the pilot program come in with iBricks that cannot be unbricked. That could easily be the end of any possibility of the iPhone in our enterprise structure.

i also updated my iphone to version 1.1.1. And like many lost all of my applications, BUT. Just like few, i downgraded my iphone. and itoner works just fine. all my apps are working just fine.

I have 1.1.1. installed on my phone and a few custom ringtones created by garageband. My ringtones worked fine after the upgrade so I thought I would make another brand new ringtone and sync it to my phone...That's when they disappeared! If you have custom ringtones, don't create anymore or you will lose them all!

if you'll hold the home button and the lock button on top for about ten seconds, let go of the home button and if its connected to iTunes itll prompt you saying theres a phone in recovery mode. That should get you back up any time you brick it. Hope you have a back up in itunes.

Is there anyway to UN-install 1.1.1?

Because now that I have it, I don't want it. My Griffin back up/car charger is now 'unsupported' and won't work.
