iPhone may be looking for a European vacation
Among the most frequent questions we’re asked about the iPhone is when it will be available to countries beside the US. The only answer we’ve had is what Apple has told us: they plan to be in three major European countries by the end of the year, and expanding into Asia and other parts of the world in 2008.
Now we have another suggestion that plans are proceeding apace: Apple’s sent out an announcement for an event scheduled for September 18th at their Regent Street, London store, saying only “Mum’s no longer the word.” We don’t know for sure that this will be iPhone-related, but it seems like a pretty good guess, especially amidst more reports this morning that Apple and UK cell provider O2 have signed a profit-sharing deal, with details expected “in the next few days.”
The odds certainly look good, so if you’re looking to place a little flutter, we wouldn’t say no.

“Mum’s no longer the word.”

An odd phrase to use across the pond, since "mum" means "mom" in Great Britain.

As a Brit now retiired to Cyprus I wonder when Apple are going to realise that there is a great big world of untapped potential out there. To my knowledge there is only one dealership on the island (the second largest island in the Mediterranean BTW) and they closed for the summer holidays just when my old G3 PB finally gave up the ghost and I needed a replacement urgently. I ended up buying from a dealer in Amman, Jordan. My point is, I would just LOVE to buy an iPhone but it looks like it may be a very long (or even infinite) wait for those of us not resident in the US or UK.
Come on Apple, time to pay me back for 20 years of unwavering support!

"Mum's the word" is an English phrase meaning keep quite, so I guess they're saying that from tomorrow on they don't have to keep quite (keep "mum") about the upcoming announcement. Keeping mum refers to humming, which you have to do with your lips sealed, it's apparently from Shakespeare.
