Google Calendar, Reader, Mail make nice with the iPhone

GCalDespite all the developments in the native third-party space, let’s not let web apps fall by the wayside. Google sure isn’t: the folks in Mountain View have revamped several of their web services to be decidedly friendlier in Safari on the iPhone and iPod touch alike.

If you’re constantly on the Gmail, you’ll want to check out the slimmed down version of Mobile Gmail. It drops a lot of the superfluous information you’ll see in the normal web interface, and it loads in a snap.

Feed junkies who haven’t gotten their fix on the iPhone should take a a look at the iPhone version of Google Reader, which is far more lightweight and easier to browse than it’s full counterpart.

Finally, the biggest changes are afoot at Google Calendar. By default, it now uses a simple display mode that’s similar to the built-in Calendar’s list view, showing you your upcoming events color-coded by virtue of what calendar they’re on.

Add that in with Maps, and Google and the iPhone seem poised to be best friends 4ever. I just hope they can avoid the inevitable squabbles over popstar crushes.

Dan,

Thanks for this information. Any idea how to make it work with Google Apps? I know I can load my Google apps page in the iPhone browser, but I was kind of hoping this larger, sleeker interface would work for those of us not using just the basic Goog.

@Tammy: As of yet, I don't think this is possible, but I would be unsurprised to see Google bring some iPhone love to more apps in the future.

Any idea whether week or month view will be available for the iPhone?

Anyone have any idea how to specify the U.S. variant of calendar? For some reason (and this is a problem w/ the grown-up version of Safari, but not with Firefox, oddly), since I'm in China, Google automatically notices that and sends me to the Chinese-language version of calendar, which is utterly worthless to me. I've tried specifying ?hl=en at the end of the url (http://www.google.com/calendar?hl=en), but no luck.

Any thoughts?

Wasn't Jobs promising us 'Full Internet'?!

I need a iphone or ipod type touch device that has the following: Email/internet, a note program or somewhere I can place written notes on and listen to music? Now, should i get the iphone or ipod touch?
