For those of you looking to salve your wounds with Apple’s $100 store credit, the good day has arrived. If you head over to Apple’s site, you’ll find the instructions for collecting your early adopter “reward.” Before you get too excited, however, it’s worth reading through the small print to see which phones are actually eligible for the rebate.
Some iPhones will not qualify for a credit. They are: (1) iPhones purchased from Apple from August 22, 2007, through September 4, 2007, as they are subject to price protection (Separate terms and conditions apply. Details are available at www.apple.com/iphone/storecredit/priceprotection), (2) iPhones that have been returned to Apple or AT&T, (3) iPhones for which a Gift Card, rebate, or other consideration have already been issued, (4) iPhones that Apple provided to employees, either for personal use or for departmental use, (5) iPhones provided by Apple for product reviews, (6) AppleCare Service iPhones, (7) iPhones registered to customers whose addresses are outside the United States, (8) iPhones for which Apple or AT&T already has extended price protection under applicable sales terms, and (9) iPhones purchased by corporations or education institutions where Apple has provided alternative accommodation. It’s also worth noting that only phones which have been activated with AT&T are entitled to the credit, so if you bought one and activated it through *ahem* other means, you’re out of luck.
The process itself is pretty straightforward: enter your iPhone’s serial number (which you can find under Settings -> General -> About) and your phone number. You’ll get a text message with an access code, which you then enter on Apple’s website, and it will be magically transmuted into a credit number and a PIN. Bring that to any Apple store for $100 off your next purchase.
Will this calm the angry masses calling for Steve Jobs’s head on a pike? Unlikely, but I suspect there are plenty of people who would have been heading back to the Apple Store anyway.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Thank You APPLE (and belatedly Steve Jobs).
I, for one, would have settled for a little sticker that said
"one of the FIRST million"
but I'll take the money and spend it with a smile.

I agree, I was never upset about the price drop, but since Apple is offering it, I will be happy to partake.
I plan on using mine in October to pay for a Leopard OS upgrade. I think that is an excellent use for the "Reward".

Hmmmmm... I'm getting $200 credit back from my credit card (thank you buyer's protection), but what's to prevent me from getting the $100 credit from Apple as well?
Not that I'd actually do that, of course.
Just curious.
Didn't expect anything.....so I'll gladly accept the "gift". I'm on my way to the Apple Store to spend it!

Doesn't seem to work if you've changed your digits -- emailing Apple now.
Need the $100 and not store credit. Buy something for 99.99(will be over 100 with tax), use your coupon and then return it a couple days later. Apple can give you the full amount on a store credit or credit the entire amount back to your credit card.
