Sending and receiving MMS on your iPhone, with a little help from your friends

MMS WorkaroundThe iPhone’s lack of integrated support for multimedia messaging (MMS) is quite the pain. Fortunately, using the iPhone’s built-in support for email you can work around this lack of functionality. With a little preparation on both you and your friends’ parts, you can send and receive picture messages without too much trouble.

The not-so-secret secret here is that most wireless providers assign their subscribers an email address based on their phone number. If you send an email to that address, it’ll get delivered as a text message—if you attach a photo to that message—say, using the iPhone’s built-in photo emailing—it’ll get delivered as a picture message. The trick is just knowing the address of the contact you want to send the message to. The folks at Uneasy Silence have compiled a list of the most common providers.

Alltel = xxxxxxxxxx@message.alltel.com
AT&T = xxxxxxxxxx@mms.att.net
Boost Mobile = xxxxxxxxxx@myboostmobile.com
Cingular (AT&T) = xxxxxxxxxx@mms.mycingular.com
Einstein PCS = xxxxxxxxxx@einsteinmms.com
Sprint = xxxxxxxxxx@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile = xxxxxxxxxx@tmomail.net
US Cellular = xxxxxxxxxx@mms.uscc.net
Verizon Wireless = xxxxxxxxxx@vzwpix.com
Virgin Mobile = xxxxxxxxxx@vmobl.com
And to make it even easier, you can just enter this address as an additional email in your contact’s address record.

For receiving messages, the same principle works in reverse. Your iPhone, after all, has a robust email client built-in. And just like the wireless provider has email addresses for every phone, most phones can send text and picture messages to email addresses. So instead of having your friend send that snapshot to your phone, have them send it to any email account that you have set up on your iPhone.

It’s hardly an ideal solution, and I’d hope that Apple adds in real MMS support in its first major software upgrade, but for the moment, it may tide you over.

I'm missing something here.

The only way to send a photo to an iPhone is to send email to an email account on your iPhone. The xxxxxxxxxx@mms.att.net is meaningless and not supported on an iPhone right?

So is this list implying that I can send an email with a photo attached from my iPhone to a different kind of cellphone (that DOES support MMS) using the above mms addresses? And it looks like my iPhone just sent an MMS?

Or are these addresses moot for anyone with an iPhone.

Jim

@Jim: Right, that list applies for the people you want to send a picture message to. So, for example, if you wanted to send an MMS to your friend on Verizon whose phone number is 123-456-7890, you'd send the photo to 1234567890@vzwpix.com

If your friend wants to send a photo message to your iPhone, then they should just send it to any email address that you check on your iPhone: bob@mac.com, for example.

Sorry if that was unclear; hope that help.s

@Dan: My bad. Your article clearly states that. I think I had a pre-expectation of a "cheat" to use MMS to an iPhone so I was trying to read things that weren't between the lines.

Thanks for writing this.

Jim

Actually its alot easier just to use xxxxxxxxxx@teleflip.com which for free, automatically sends the picture to the correct carrier.

One thing about sending to people on Verizon, if you do it from your Yahoo PUSH account, Vz will reject the email (MMS) on their end. You have to set up another email account and do it from there.

Not sure if Vz or Yahoo is to blame for that one?

I just sent a photo TO my iPhone's (123) 456-7890 number using the at&t tag address and GOT IT! (from my MAC's Mail AP)

I then sent a picture FROM my phone to another iPhone's at&t email and THEY got the picture!!!

NO kidding
That Ray Guy

thanks for this post!

Except for incoming MMS, I, for one, think this is better if Apple doesn't activate MMS. After all, AT&T has way overpriced their SMS service for the iPhone while data is nice and free.

How can you send pics to normal email so it appears to come from and MMS device? Some services like YouTube and Facebook mobile work like this. I guess the email has to be MMS format?

The problem with sending a photo to my gmail is that it doesn't cause my iphone to beep or alert me that I have recieved the MMS. In Japan, when I sent an e-mail to a phone number the receiver's phone beeped just like a sms txt message. Is there a way to send a txt so that it will beep the phone, and not cost like a txt message?

Also, Verizon has a web app on thier web page that allows users to send txt messages from the internet, does att have a similar app for iphone users?

I tried it and the recipient received the text but the picture didn't show up.

I really hope apple gets this figured out.

Anyone know how to send an MMS from iPhone to Facebook's mobile photos address? The are now saying (with the recent 1.1.1. update) that they aren't accepting regular emails of photos from the phone. I'm trying to figure out an MMS address for Facebook....

this is wack. this is email, not MMS

This only works if the e-mail provided by the carrier is HTML correct?

I use Rogers in Canada and it doesnt seem to work because the incoming e-mail is basic PLAIN TEXT format.. the picture isnt seen.

Maybe its different for others but thats what happened for me. I just e-mail pics now.

So how does someone send a MMS to your Iphone if they just have MMS and not the internet.

My question is this: can a photo attachment be downloaded and stored directly to my iPhone or do I have to load it via iTunes?

How can I receive my photos if some one sends the MMS thur my email address. Or is it a easier way to receive pictures to my IPhone. They are alltel carrier and I am not getting it.

So, I attempted to send an embaressing picture to my friend, but ended up sending it to my dad on accident, and though I don't have an Iphone of my own I kinda understand the basic principle of when you send a multimedia picture to an Iphone, they get a text message with a code that tells them to log onto "viewmymessages.com" i believe, and then they provide you with a code to view the picture. That's the only way I know of any kind of alert, so I obtained his phone before he had the chance to view it, but there was no unread text so I proceeded to send him other pictures to see if an alert would pop up, so I could delete them and the initial message, but they never showed up. So what do I do? Did he remove this feature? Or have it so they are sent directly to the email? I'm not sure what do do here guys. Help me out...

AT&T blocked the 'www.viewmymessage.com' from being accessed by the iPhone for some reason. It wont ever load when you try to go to it via Safari on the iphone. It works when you are on a regular computer though. I guess this is Apple and AT&T wanting people to actually use the E-Mail feature.

will someone please send me a detail message on how to receive.

I log in just fine to viewmymessage.com with my iPhone! Maybe it was a glitch in earlier versions of software, but I tried it yeasterday for the first time and had no problem! Worked again earlier today. It could also be depending on the local city's service (I'm in New Orleans)

I have T-Mobile = xxxxxxxxxx@tmomail.net, not sure what I am doing but I email out and nother was recever back to me or other person...Also if it coming back as email how do you setup iphone email because it ask for in & out with passwords...etc

How do you set up the email account on the iphone to receive MMS?

April,

How do you set up the email account on the iphone to receive MMS?

You don't have to. Have them send it to the email address you have stup for your Iphone. Nothing special.

I am very disappointed in Apple for not putting mms capability on their Phone. The customers go out and pay all our hard earned money on this Phone that want do the simple things like forwarding a text message.

I was completely surprised that the IPhone does not have mms capability. Don't you think that when people send photos to each other using their phones it's because they want to view them right away, without having to search through email for them? We don't call each other up, leave messages, and then wait for a response, do we? No. We actually have conversations. The Iphone took a step backwards regarding photo sharing.

The iPhone is a giant leap forward as it cut's the ties to old technology and forces users towards the furture of all devices being robustly e-mail capable. Bravo! The problem isn't that MMS is not supported, the real problem is that other makers haven't moved towards the future the way the iPhone has. In the mean time we'll all have to put up with everyone elses "old" technology.

I love the iPhone. But my son is in the Marines & we are having a he'll of a time getting this mms thing to share pictures.

I just tried sending pics to sprint and verizon, and neither one worked. Just got a message saying that it wasn't sent because it couldn't fine the host. Anyone else had that happen?

I have a couple multimedia messages waiting but it says go to viewmy messages.com. It give me the message ID and password. When I go to that site on my laptop, I can't figure out what I am to do. Each time I click on something like multimedia messges, another page of sponsored links show up. HELP

Everybody keeps talking about email messaging being more advanced than mms and apple shouldn't include mms in future releases. Which would be fine, I guess, if I could actually save the emailed attachment to my iphone. What's the point of checking my email, then having to check my email to get attachments? Lacks that feature too. My iphone doesn't make me elite. I'm not proud to be excluded from the rest of society by having a phone that can't handle picture functions. Just include everything in the next release and the beret wearing mac people can keep using their "lite" email browser to view pictures all they want....

Heres my problem. I keep trying to send a pic to my regular e-mail account and my keeps saying: your message has been sent the out box que! an when i go to check to see if my pic has been sent to my e- mail address I fined that it hasn't. What is this out box que, and why can't i receive my pic's?

pktpix.com lets you send pictures, without having to remember the obscure and random carrier domains. just send to ##########@pktpix.com, and the recipient gets a text message with a link to your image.

A link that's a LOT less painful than AT&T's viewmymessage.com...

Does anybody besides myself think that it's CRIMINAL for Apple to screw us on the MMS support? What's the big damn deal here? It's been through at least SIX updates so far, and nothing. This pisses me off. It's not like the iPhone isn't capable of receiving MMS, hell the V600 that I had 3 years ago had no problem doing it. I love Apple, but this is nothing short of pathetic. Get your asses in gear, guys, or you're gonna see people get sick of the lack of necessary features.

what's with the high and mighty talk about iPhone?? i just bought mine yesterday. found out it doesnt even have the necessary features like the MMS??!!!! no flash to the camera, the ringing tone is not loud enough, and it really pisses me off whenever im typing the text messages. it keeps trying to correct my spellings which i DO NOT NEED!! and another thing, how do i tell if the phone is on not on flight mode when it doesnt have at least a blinking light to indicate that the phone is on!
iphone sucks, thank you.

Personally I think the big deal about the iPhone is the gravity thing where it flips everything and the that it has a touch screen and last that it has an iPod everything else is crap and something I could have done with a cheaper phone made back in 2003. It doesn't even record a video but I plays youtube. I mean who needs video and flash any way. Getting picture mail sent to me is pointless, I can't save it to my phone. I mean sending text messages is annoying the whole time it's incorrectly correcting what I sent, but then again the editing options on the phone sucks too. Can we get a cut and paste tool along with the rest when u decide to do another one of the useless updates. I mean moving icons on my home page isn't that useful. Oh and the fact that I can only have songs as ring ids after paying 99 cents to make it sucks. Why I am not permitted to hear a song when I recieve a text instead of hearing chimes or some random noise is beyond me. Also safari isn't all that great I can't view some websites because of not having flash I thought this was supposed be all the capabilities of the Internet in my hands. It sucks basically you pay $400 for an 8gb iPod with touch screen and gravity the rest of the capabilities could be achieved with one of the first camera phones invented. The point of getting a phone with extra capabilities is to make things easier and better. I mean at one point I thought apple was great now I am wondering the hype.

I like to have those addresses to be able to text people on their phone from my computer and for people to be able to text me from their computer for example if I travel abroad and will disable the data feature to prevent horrendous bills (I can use the internet and email when I get access to wifi). So giving people the option to send me a brief text via MSM would save money.

I tried the att address you list above and also the teleflip address but neither is going through to my iPhone. i wonder if att changed them. It would be a nice feature.

Photos sent via email to #########@vzwpix.com (verizon) keep getting returned - "Remote hote said: 550 SMPT connection refused" What can I do??? Thank you!

i have an iphone and i cannt get to find a way to send pics to other cell phones, is there any way to do it?? and theres a company in florida call metro pcs and my friends have that company and i want to send them pics but i cannt find the way can someone help me please?????!! thanks!

none of those work not teleflip or pktpix or even sending it to the carriers e mails, i have tried them all i just got my iphone too i didnt think it would be so hard to send pictures to someone it sucks but guess we are all just gonna have to wait till they come out with a update and till then get all of our friends and family to give us there emails

if anyone can find anything other than whats on this then let me know i have tried them all and they dont work

Well, I have tried just about everything u guys have said, and still no luck.... I just want to send a picture from my iphone to my boyfriends phone which is with Alltel. All that shows up on his phone is the text portion, and he doesnt have an email so that is NOT a solution. I have had a lot of trouble with my iphone, such as the iphone not saving pictures that I have just takin, and not being able to download the images off viewmymessage.com on to my PC or the iphone itself. However, I have found a way around both of those problems. If anyone needs to know how please just ask; also, to those of you thinking about purchasing the iphone, apple hasnt done anything in an effort to fix these problems and I dont think we are going to have a stroke of good luck in the future, in other words, there are probably going to be more problems. Customer complaints could possibly persuede apple to look into this issue and hopefully we will get some results.

pktpix.com worked great for me when sent to my iphone just havent figured out a way to send to another cell phone without web access. I too tried the carriers emails but just the text goes through not the picture but hey at least people can send me picture messages guess I will just have to be satisfied with emailing them till they all get caught up! lol otherwise I am happy with my Iphone, sure I would love mms but hey its a phone mostly use it for talking anyways! and I have no problems with the web browsing maybe its because of the area I am in.

I want to send a pic to someone using Metro PCS phone service. I do not see the code for that. Does anyone know what it is? And thanks to everyone who puts in this information. It's been helpful.

Does anyone know Hotmail's and Gmail's??

will it coast anything to download a picture if your not on internet

I have figured out how to send a picture via email but unfortanlty my friends don't know how to view email on their phones so now I have to explain it to each and everyone of my friends. Most of my friends don't pay for data usage on the phones they use unlimited text. now they have to add additional costly features to their plan just to get a pic via email from an iphone???

I'm still missing something here while trying to upload a photo to Facebook. They say, "send an MMS to mobile@facebook.com "
What does that translate into on an iPhone.
How do I use the codes above?
They don't provide an eight digit number, just a 5 digit one...
Sorry to be so thick.

Total crap that you have to hack a $400 phone to get it to perform such a basic function.

can u save a picture to your iPhone that is emailed to you? If so how do you do it?

can u not view video emailed to you in wmv format

hey guys, i have read thru the whole forum, and numerous others. could someone please explain to me how to actually set up my email on iphone with t-mobile being the carrier to send mms. i understand how you're all saying to send to an email, but how do i set mine up?
