Review: WaterField Designs iPhone Suede Jacket

In addition to WaterField Design’s iPhone Smart Cases, the company also recently released its $9 iPhone Suede Jacket. Perhaps the simplest iPhone case we’ve yet seen, it will nevertheless be appealing to some people.
The Jacket is merely a slip-in pouch made of the same black, machine-washable “Ultrasuede” used to line WaterField’s Slip, Flap, and Clip cases. It’s quite soft, so it won’t scratch your iPhone; in fact, you can use the pouch itself as a polishing cloth for the iPhone’s screen. When in the pouch—your iPhone slides easily in and out—the phone is protected against scratches and (very) mild bumps, but the Jacket is so thin and fits so snug that it adds hardly any bulk. In other words, the Jacket is ideal for when you want to stick your iPhone in a bag or pocket and not worry about scratches from keys or coins.
There’s really not much more to say here. If you’re worried about scratches but you don’t want the bulk of a “real” case, the Suede Jacket is a nice option that’s much less expensive than most iPhone cases; and considering that I’ve seen basic polishing cloths made of similar material for $5 or more, $9 for a pouch that fits your iPhone like a glove seems reasonable.

I just went to purchase one. I thought 9 bones? that's a no-brainer, I'll get it and I don't even need one! Maybe 3 more for shipping? The most inexpensive shipping is $7 for ground. How much can this thing weigh? I pay $2 more to have 10 pounds of raw coffee beans shipped to me.

That's a good point, Walt -- and an issue I've noticed many vendors of inexpensive products seem to have. I'm going to drop WaterField a note and ask if they plan on offering any other shipping options for this product.

What’s funny is, these things do not take much to make. It’s a friggin piece of cloth (albeit nice cloth, I just wanted to say friggin), folded in half, sew the cuff seam and sides together, and then pulled inside out. My wife made one for my little XM radio that sits in my car (Roady XT). Your R&D (dimensions) has been posted on Apple’s website since January. Your total cost as a company boils down to a large spool of black thread, equipment you already use, and some yardage of fabric that you already had. Me, shopping at Hobby Lobby, can get a standard consumer sized sheet of fabric for 2-5 bucks (varies depending on the quality of the fabric, and this will be cheap), and can make up to 3 separate slip on covers, sell for $9 each. That’s a very good profit margin for me; you know manufacturers get far better deals on fabric then I ever could.
You now what? I just may try that out. Seriously. If I do, I’ll send you one to review Dan. Who knows. Maybe I’ll sell them on ebay. We’ve already got an elaborate sewing machine and plenty of black thread. Might as well get some use out of it. I just talked to my wife (who would be doing the sewing) and she’s game. I’ve got a project for the week!

I once ordered one of their shoulder strap pads and they offered to send it first class mail instead of their usual fedex.
I'd think if you requested it they would do it for this, but really for small items this needs to be a selectable option.
There are probably several things that would have been impulse buys if not for shipping.
Anyone concerned should e-mail them, as they seem very receptive to feedback.

This is a great product.
Unfortunately, I won't buy it because the shipping cost is INSANE!!!
There are ways of shipping things like this cheaply. But for a company to charge almost as much as the product itself for shipping is ridiculous.
You would think that anyone clever enough to invent this nice little case should be clever enough to figure out ways to ship it to customers cheaply and easilly. Unfortunately, not.
Or at least not yet. WaterField, if you're listening: please fix this! Please show that you are as flexible as the case itself, and provide a shipping option appropriate to its cost and weight.
What I shame. I would have bought this case in a heartbeat were it not for exorbitant shipping costs.

Are you guys experiencing "scratching" issues on your iPhones? I'm not. I don't think I could scratch this thing if i tried. I use a case, but that's only because the darn thing is so slippery, I don't trust myself using it without some kind of rubberized grip...but I'm not seeing the need for a suede slipcover...
Really curious if people are finding that they're iPhones are getting scuffed and scratched..

Gary: I haven't experienced any scratching (yet). I've mentioned PC World's torture testing, which found the iPhone to be surprisingly resistant to scratches, but some people -- including myself, to some extent -- are paranoid about scratches and simply want to take precautions.
That said, if a few tiny scratches won't bother you, you'll likely be fine without any protection.

@Ward
I contacted them and asked them to send it first class mail. but they refused. the only way for me to buy it was to pay almost twice as much with shipping.
What are these guys thinking?
consider me another customer turned away by the shipping problem.

I wasn't worried about scratches until this weekend. I've been careful not to put my iPhone in my pocket with my keys as a base precation, but at some point on Saturday I got a set of scratches/nicks in one area of the display. So I'll be picking up a screen protector at the very least. I'm still not sure of how it got scratched.

Not entirely relevant, as I've got a iPod Classic, but same thing really.
I wanted to get a simple slip case, like the ones that shipped with the iPod Videos. I tried one of those, but it was just too big to be of any use.
Then I found Waterfield, and thought great! A case that doesn't weight 4 lbs!
Then I found out about the shipping, and because I'm in the UK, that will cost me $25, nearly 3 times the amount for the case!
I think I may find some Chamois leather or something and make my own...

I'm not sure what the big deal is about the shipping cost. When you add the shipping to the cost of the case, it's still the best deal in town. I got one for myself and now I'm back for stocking stuffers. Waterfield has great customer service. I'm a fan, and I'm sticking by them on this one. Great gear. (And, they make their stuff in the US, which is pretty difficult to find these days.)
