Our iPhone Wish List: the iPod

Continuing the Wish List series, here’s our list of features we’d like to see in the iPhone’s iPod section; the number after each item represents how many editors, out of seven, requested that feature in our informal survey.
Already covered: iPod Disk Mode (6).
Bluetooth A2DP (4): As I explained back in June, A2DP stands for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, a Bluetooth profile that supports stereo audio transmission; newer mobile phones use A2DP to send stereo audio wirelessly to compatible speaker systems and to stereo Bluetooth headsets. As I noted back then, I find the iPhone’s lack of A2DP support especially odd given that the iPhone includes the best music player of any phone on the market. But I suspect—and comments from a couple sources support my suspicion—that A2DP support will be added by a future software update.
Lyrics display (4): Even though Steve Jobs called the iPhone the “best iPod ever,” it’s missing a few features other iPods have had for quite a while. One of these is the capability to display each track’s lyrics (assuming you’ve got the lyrics in iTunes, of course). Given that the iPhone’s screen is much more suited to reading text than the screens of exiting iPods, this omission is disappointing.
iPod games support (4): As with lyrics, the iPhone’s gorgeous display seems well-suited for games; and lets not forget that the iPhone runs a version of OS X and, presumably, includes more powerful hardware than the 5G iPod. On the other hand, existing iPod games would have to be updated substantially to work with the iPhone’s touchscreen interface and lack of a Click Wheel.
Physical buttons for basic playback control (3): The iPhone’s touchscreen interface is stunning, but it’s useless when the phone is in your pocket or a bag. As I wrote recently, a good music player needs physical buttons for at least basic playback controls: play/pause, forward, back, volume. (The button built into the iPhone’s earbuds doesn’t count; it’s a clever design, but it can only toggle playback and skip forward. Not to mention that many people prefer to use better headphones.) Even a simple wired remote, a la Apple’s iPod Radio Remote without the radio, would do.
Voice recording/memos (3): Many modern mobile phones let you record voice memos, as do current dockable iPods if you connect a dock-connector microphone. Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn't provide such a feature, even though it has the hardware to do so. We hope this one will be added in a software update.
Manual management in iTunes (3): iPods let you manually manage their content, but the iPhone allows only automatic syncing. Although the iPhone is the first "iPod" to let you sync different types of content with different computers, we'd still like to see a manual-management mode.
Video-out (3): The iPhone is clearly the best video-playing iPod yet, thanks to a screen that's both larger and of higher quality than the one on 5G iPods. But unlike those iPods, neither the iPhone's dock-connector port nor its headphone jack outputs video. In other words, you can't connect your iPhone to your TV to watch iPhone-hosted video--a feature that would be welcome when stuck in a hotel with nothing on TV.
Online iTunes Store purchases (3): Given that the iPhone has Internet access and runs a version of Mac OS X, several editors have a dream that they'll someday be able to browse the iTunes Store and purchase music and video directly from the iPhone.
Silent mode should mute speaker output (3): If you flip the iPhone's Ring/Silent switch to Silent, you would expect the phone to be, well, silent. Yet if you play media (purposely or accidentally) without any headphones connected, the audio still plays back through the iPhone's speaker. A friend of mine discovered this the hard way when she let her nephew play with her new iPhone--in Silent mode--during a church service. "SexyBack" wasn't on the program that day, but it was heard.
Transfer all album art (3): iTunes stores album art either embedded in each music file or as separate image files, depending on how that art was added. Unfortunately, only one of the two is synced to the phone, leaving you with blank covers for albums for which you know you've added art. Either iTunes should store all album art the same way, or the iPhone should be able to sync both types.
AutoFill (2): Nearly a year and a half ago, I explained why I wanted Autofill for iPods other than the shuffle. That article was written with the iPod nano in mind, but it applies just as well to the iPhone today. Unfortunately, given that Apple still hasn't made this feature available to any non-shuffle iPod, I'm not holding my breath that it will make its way to the iPhone.
Working embedded podcast links (2): If you listen to an enhanced podcast in iTunes, you can click on embedded links to visit those links in your Web browser. Click on a link anywhere on the iPhone and Safari opens the URL. So you'd think you'd be able to tap an embedded link in a podcast on the iPhone to visit it. You'd be wrong.
FM radio (2): Given the myriad wireless signals swirling around inside each iPhone, an FM radio may not be the most feasible feature. Then again, my previous mobile, a Sony-Ericsson Walkman phone, had an FM tuner that worked pretty well. Whatever the case, two editors wish they could listen to the radio when they get tired of their own music.
Clockwise and counter-clockwise video rotation (1): A minor criticism, but one editor wonders why, if you can turn your iPhone clockwise or counter-clockwise to get a horizontal display in Photos or Cover Flow, why can't you do the same while watching a video? (Only counter-clockwise works.) Why indeed.

A virtual scroll-wheel just like an iPod.
The scrubbing feature in the iPhone doesn't work nearly as well as it does on the iPods. On an hour long podcast, its frustrating to try to scan through to find a particular segment.

I'll disagree on the SILENCE button muting music playback. Currently the SILENCE button mutes outside interruptions... someone calling you during a meeting, etc. It doesn't mute things you have other control of: music playback, alarms.
I personally like going to sleep with the iPod personality playing music (with the timer shutting it off after 30 minutes) but not hearing any phone calls during the night.
There is reason to the madness.

A virtual scroll wheel would be awesome! I find it very hard to move a podcast back about 20-30 seconds when I get to my destination after listening. I usually do this as a short reminder as to where I was.
Physical buttons for iPod usage might be a good idea. However, lets make that an accessory instead of adding buttons to an otherwise perfect piece of hardware. You wouldn't want buttons on the device anyway if it's in your pocket or jacket since you would have to dig it out to use the buttons. Kind of defeats the purpose.
I wouldn't mind a radio, but I really don't listen to the radio since I have my ipod anyway. It's why I have an iPod. To not have to listen to crappy radio. Maybe internet radio would be good, but if the RIAA and who ever else is pushing it gets their way, we won't have that for long anyway.

Jim: I see what you're saying. How about it being an option? ;-)
Dave: "you would have to dig it out to use the buttons. Kind of defeats the purpose." -- Not at all: with physical buttons, you can reach into your pocket or bag and use the controls by feel; for example, with the Click Wheel on current iPods, I play/pause, skip or scan forward or back, or control volume without having to look at the device.
That said, as I mentioned in the article, I think most of us would be happy with something like the Radio Remote without the radio.

Dan, I disagree. I used to use my 5G iPod for podcasts in the car, and I didn't know which way my iPod was orientated to know which side of the wheel needed to be clicked in order to pause or what ever.
I really miss the little wired remote I had with my older iPod.
A wireless remote or Bluetooth remote would be just fine with me. It's cleaner on the hardware of the iPhone and no matter where I had the iPhone or iPod, I could use the remote to do what I needed to do.
I still want some kind of jog wheel of some kind to change the position of where I am in a podcast or audiobook. Using the slider on the iPhone to adjust the position is just not usable. A virtual scroll wheel would be awesome.

Here's an idea: instead of the Bluetooth A2DP, how about AirTunes support? The range would be greater, and WiFi is already in there; then we could stream from iPhone directly to an Airport Express, and into the home stereo. Use the iPhone as the ultimate remote control. Heck, even use your stereo as a speakerphone!

anyone mention being able to send out SMS to more than one person at a time? the lack of the feature is bananas.

how about being able to read the full podcast descriptions instead of "..." similar to the utoob functionality?

When playing music in vertical orientation, I would like to be able to swipe my finger from right to left to advance to the next track. I have my phone mounted in my car and the active hit area for the next track button would better be served with an addition of a gesture to the left across the album art. Swiping to the right already takes you to the track list, so it's not far out of reach. :)

SKETCH PAD - Doodle with your finger. Instead of using napkins.

Regarding the external physical buttons... I have a Griffin AirClick remote control and tested it tonight with my iPhone. It works perfectly. I am so pleased since that was the setup I used with my 5G iPod while snowboarding; mounting the AirClick on the wrist strap of my left ski glove.

How about gestures for basic playback controls?

If the iPhones silent mode muted audio from the speaker, than maybe that would help out our current a2dp problem. Bluetooth headsets can play music from the iPhone, as many users have already learned, but when it does, it still plays outloud through the speakers. If the mute would mute the audio from the speakers and the bluetooth still worked, it'd be a real nice touch. As for physical buttons i say please dont, i like the use of just the few buttons, it makes the iPhone different from others, and if you need to change songs, take your phone out of your pocket, it isnt a hard thing to do. MMS and texts to multiple contacts should be an EASY update for the iPhone, and if they stop being douches about it all, they'll release it, its in our contracts for service (MMS that is). As for TV-OUT, i think it's already available (unless it was the new update that just came out) cause its in settings under ipod. as for ringtones, it'd be nice to be able to use non-apple purchased tones, but assuming that 'hack' is done away with for good, the ability to change text message tones with purchased ones would be cool (how great would it be if every time you got a text rather than tri-tone you heard the powerrangers comm tone, or CTU's ringtone?). I know this article's old, but iTunes purchases ARE now available via the phone. And honestly, i dont want to be listening to FM radio from my phone, BUT i do pay for Sirius Satellite Radio, and I recieve Sirius Radio Online as well, and it wuold be REALLY COOL if i could sign into my Sirius Online and listen via my headphones from my iPhone.

Encrypted storage for passwords: do you have dozens of them, too? I want to have them in my pocket!
Use the Mac OS keychain and sync it to the iPhone. That would be great!
