iToner brings no muss, no fuss iPhone ringtones

iTonerOne of the first things I did when I got my first cell phone was create some custom ringtones. Back in those days, I had to actually sit down at my piano, pick out a song, and then program it into the phone with an archaic code representing musical notes. My subsequent phone made this much easier by letting me upload an MP3 file (albeit through a slightly convoluted method), but I took a step back with the iPhone. Sure, there’s iFuntastic for those who didn’t mind the slightly unorthodox procedure, but I’d suspect there are plenty of users who are uncomfortable with even the word “jailbreak.”

To the rescue comes Ambrosia Software, maker of fine utilities like SnapzPro X and delectable games like SketchFighter 4000. Their newest endeavor, iToner, may sound like a cheap way to refill your laser printer, it’s actually a $15 application that lets you upload custom ringtones to your iPhone via drag and drop. You can also set it up to synchronize with a playlist from your iTunes library if you like, though be warned: when you pick your ringtones yourself, the temptation to jam along to the song can often override the urge to actually answer your phone. Thank heavens for Visual Voicemail.

It’s worth pointing out that there’s certainly a chance that Apple will be filling this breach themselves at some point in the future—perhaps as soon as next Wednesday’s special iPod event. Fortunately, iToner’s got a 30-day free trial, so no reason not to download it and give it a whirl. Finally, I can return the haunting harmonica riff from the Perfect Strangers theme song to its rightful place in my ringtone list.

very nice and easy to use program. One of my biggest hangups about my iphone was the lack of ringtones, and i do not want to risk my phone by hacking it... YET! Good job Ambrosia.

How about a review? How's it work?

Nice program. Works great. Apple really needs to get thier stuff together and allow custom ringtones but in the meantime iToner is awesome especially for those of us that don't wanna do the full hack methods to our phones.

This is a very simpl and easy to use program for putting custom ringtones on your iPhone without having to hack your phone. The user interface is easy and intuitive, alowing for adding or deleting your own customer ringtones. Sure wish apple would get with it and incorporate such a great and much needed feature like ringtones into the iPhone. Till then, there is iToner. Great Job Ambrosia.

Simple to use. Unfortunately you cannot edit the ringtone within iToner.

Erica Sadun's SongSender is Way Better, It even allows you to send the song to another person, and it's also free!

I've been using iToner for a few days now, it's fantastic. It couldn't be simpler, you just drag any mp3/AAC file onto a GUI that looks just like an iPhone. Within the GUI you see a list of the ringtones you want on your phone, click the "home" button and it updates your iphone with the new ringtones in less than 1 second per tone. Bingo.

It keeps a running list of tones you've added, and when you delete a tone (for instance you accidentally put the same tone twice) it deletes it from the phone too. This seems simple at first, but it's really very smart: iToner keeps a running list of your added ring tones so you can manage them very easily and see each time you open the program which ones you already have on the phone so you don't have to look at the phone to figure it out.

Combined with phonezoo.com (which allows you to upload any unprotected mp3/AAC and edit it into the ringtone you want) you have a very easy, relatively cheap way to turn virtually any song or mp3/aac noise on your computer into a ringtone and get it on your iphone.

The best part IMO is that (theoretically anyways) your tones will NOT be wiped out with the next Apple software update... unlike ringtones installed with ifuntastic etc.
