Apple kicks iPhone users in the shins

iMac wirelessSure, there was some love for the iPhone in today’s Mac-centric presentation by Steve Jobs. The new .Mac Web Gallery, for example, has an iPhone specific interface (that doesn’t appear to let you pinch or flick, sadly). And the new version of iMovie will make it a snap to export iPhone-compatible video files.

But the brand new iMac was clearly the star of the show, and as I was reading over the details, I came across this bit about Bluetooth:

Built-in Bluetooth takes wireless liberation to another level. Have a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone or PDA? Sync it with your iMac using iSync (part of Mac OS X) and keep your contacts and calendars up to date.
Well, gee, unless you have the supposedly most advanced smartphone on the planet. In which case, you’ll have to plug it in with a pesky cable. Thanks for rubbing it in, Apple.

My thoughts exactly. I snickered a bit when I read that line. How can they post that on their website in good conscience?

IMHO bluetooth synching is not worth the trouble.

Actually, I think there's just a bit too much there to expect the iPhone to be able to sync using bluetooth. Imagine how much time it would take to sync all those photos and music using a bluetooth connection.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even if you could sync your iPhone over Bluetooth 2.0, wouldn't it be unbearably slow compared to USB 2.0?

With other "smartphones" you're not transferring GBs of data each time you sync. Perhaps that's the reason Bluetooth syncing isn't supported for the iPhone.

two cents

You should take solace in the fact that the new iMac is the spawn of the iPhone and the old iMac. no need to take a paternity test. It's clear who the parents are.

That's BS.

I sync my mp3 and photos via Bluetooth with my N73. It's not exactly snappy. But I've developed a routine where I just put the phone next to the computer while I work and when I leave, everything is synced.

Not superfast by any means for the first sync. But assuming your playlists don't change too dramatically too often, it's fine.

99% of what I want to be able to keep up to date is my address book and my calendar.

They could very easily let you choose what would and would not sync when syncing via Bluetooth.

Yes it's slower than USB, but if you don't have your cable with you, the speed is rather irrelevant.

So, Apple TV will stream video from computers in the house... Why won't it stream video from the computer in your pocket (iPhone)?

since most mac and other pc have wifi, why the fuss about not being able to sync with bluetooth? wifi is faster than bluetooth, and wifi is built into iphone, why not sync via wifi instead?

I would be nice to just selectively sync all the non media functions with bluetooth just like clicking sync on .mac. My calendar and address book changes more than my play lists and movies. Its a nice convenience but not the end of the world. Well and even without bluetooth sync would Wifi sync make sense?
