Metapost: iPhone Central on iPhone
Faithful iPhone Central reader Walter R. Basil wrote to us:
How about a light version of iPhone central for those of us browsing from our iPhones? Using EDGE of course.
Well, I suppose we should— hey! Whaddayamean you want a light version of the site? The whole point of the iPhone is to browse the “real” web, not a simplified version of same.
But Walt’s note got me thinking. It’s true, the way the site was designed caused our right hand columns to load before the content column on the left, which always annoyed me and made the site seem very slow, especially on the iPhone.
Well, as of today it doesn’t do that anymore. We’ve rejiggered our CSS (and we all know how painful that can be), and now iPhone Central should feel a lot faster at loading, especially that all-important content column on the left side.
Also, yesterday we implemented an experiment — an iPhone-style version of iPhone Central. We used Joe Hewitt’s iUI to implement, and there are no guarantees that it won’t break or stop working at some point, but for now if you’d like to take it for a test drive and let us know what you think, we’d be happy to receive your comments.
But seriously — try browsing the regular site on your iPhone. It should load a lot better now. And thanks, Walt, for providing the gentle prod to my posterior.

Thanks for the optimizations- it does indeed load a lot faster on the iPhone and especially over EDGE.

Very nice Jason. Thanks! The building I work in is a historical building, and handily doubles as one of those nuclear fall-out shelter. So while I rest assured I won't succumb to the the apocalypse, I do get iffy cell service while inside. I can go from 4 bars to none in a second - and without moving the phone. The beta site works great, and now that iPhone Central loads the *important* data first, it seems much speedier!

thanks for optimizing for iphone. I've enjoyed the regular site but also like the new one as well. No need to double-click to zoom before reading.
