While hackers have run into problems in their quest to unlock the iPhone for use on any carrier, they have made one important breakthrough: you can now theoretically activate your iPhone without having to sign up for a new two year contract. Good news for existing iPhone customers, especially those who are on business plans that haven’t been eligible for the iPhone, since it lets you use any existing AT&T SIM card in the iPhone.
Of course, the iASign tool is not for the faint of heart. As the documentation points out:
If you don’t know how to break the jail, how to get your DeviceID, IMEI and ICCID, or even what to do with this “activation record”, you shouldn’t probably use this tool in the first place.Here’s a tip: breaking the jail does not mean, as I originally thought, inking a complete set of blueprints onto your body in code.
