iPhone Software 1.0.1 released

Apple has released iPhone Software 1.0.1, featuring security fixes and perhaps some bug fixes too. You can download it by attaching your iPhone to iTunes, and clicking on the Check for Update button.

Be warned: If you’ve hacked your phone you’ll probably need to restore in order to use the update.

And be doubly warned: “restoring from a backup” exposes the fact that iTunes doesn’t necessarily back up all of your iPhone data. For example, after I restored my iPhone, I’ve discovered that my “backup” doesn’t remember my e-mail account settings, my Phone favorites, my camera roll, my SMS history, my Wi-Fi passwords and remembered networks, all my Notes… (Your mileage may vary widely based on your backups and your sync settings.)

So don’t update on an empty stomach, is what I’m saying. And have plenty of spare time on your hands.

Thanks... and done!

I've installed no "hacks" and the process went rather smoothly. There was a long hesitation when installing the update, right before verifying... but it eventually continued. Whole process was less than 5 minutes, and no real input from me.

Does this mean we have to change our email sigs to Sent from my iPhone 1.01? ;-)

Jason-

My iPhone backups retain my phone favorites and SMS history. I know because I restored from a backup and retained them. The camera roll is not retained, but I import my roll every few days into iPhoto.

Just thought I would chime in.

You know what would have been nice, since this article is titled "iPhone Software 1.0.1 Released"?

It would been nice of you guys to report what the heck Version 1.0.1 brings.

I'm not ready to hack my iPhone yet, probably like 99% of other iPhone owners, so this might have been a bit more newsworthy, though I am sure those who have braved the hacks are appreciative (as would I if I had done any of them, like I have the time to put my phone at risk:-)

Paul,

When we wrote the story Apple hadn't released any information about it.

The answer is: unknown bug fixes and security fixes.

No new features? Boo.

At iphoneblog.com Kent is reporting:

"Since installing this update the Mail app has become alarmingly unstable. It seems to freeze up often. "

Have you seen the same?

Regarding new features, it would be nice to see a new feature (or two) a month as a way to keep the buzz going and us happier.

Cheers,

Mark

In software development it is generally "fix bugs first, new features later".

No problems at all. However, it took a while, probably about 5 minutes which makes me shiver to think about how long 1.1 will take - if this was just a tiny bug fix, an actual upgrade may be quite painful.

Still, for the first patch, bit of an anti-climax. Probably a good thing?

no problems for me. took just about 3 minutes. all seems good (so far ...)

After the update I can't seem to find the option for entering ASCII characters in the Wi-Fi connection password field (ASCII appears to be displayed, but iPhone could interpret them as HEX or ASCII).

There used to be an option, but I don't see it anymore. Did the update disable that option? Or am I just a little slow today...?

What does "hack" mean?????

iPhone update 1.0.1 breaks use with iMuffs headphones. iMuffs still work with the phone function, but cannot play from playlists through the headphones. Another user also found this problem and we are looking for a way to downgrade to 1.0.0.

See the thread for iMuffs from Wi-Gear at:

I experienced a few issues in updating--on the first attempt, I received error messages that the phone was unable to be updated and had to be restored. Trying that, I still experienced more errors and had to restore yet a 2nd time, which finally yielded a working phone with v. 1.0.1. So I lost whatever SMS messages I had previously, along with camera roll images; everything else was preserved due to the iTunes backup.

for anyone interested, the iTunes backup/computer is an iMac G5, 2.1GHz, 1.5GB RAM.
