Have questions about using the iPhone to call abroad, or to call home when you’re jetting to another country? Apple’s provided a knowledge base article that spells out the iPhone’s various international relations. For example, when calling other countries, did you know that you dial a “+” symbol by holding down the 0 key on the keypad, and that allows you to forego dialing 011? And, when you go abroad, you can use to have to the iPhone automatically attach the right prefix to US numbers (it’s the International Assist option under Settings -> Phone). You can also choose a specific carrier, if there are multiple options available when you’re abroad, from the Settings menu (this option doesn’t appear to be available in the US).
Of course, many of the international features come at an added cost. If you want to make calls to other countries from the US, you’ll have to pay AT&T’s international rates, and if you want to use your phone outside of the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Island, you’ll need to enable your account for international roaming.
I recently traveled to London. My iPhone worked perfectly. My contacts could be called without any modification of their numbers. Even the clock automatically reset itself to the current time.
By the way the international rates AT&T charge to landlines in their World Connect ($3.99/month fee) are the same, at least for countries I call in Europe, as the Worldwide Value plan of AT&T long distance, which costs $5/month.
