Holey docks!

iPhoneDockHoles.jpg A question I’ve seen a number of times over the past few days goes something like, “Why does the iPhone’s dock have holes in the bottom? (See the image to the left.) After all, docks for “real” iPods don’t have these holes, right? Well, sure — but “real” iPods don’t have a phone, either. You see, as far as I can figure, the reason for those holes, as well as for a small gap between the front edge of the dock and its rubber base, is so that you can hear the phone’s audio, and it can pick up your voice, while in the dock. In other words, the combination of these holes and the gap beneath them lets you listen to music and use the iPhone’s speakerphone without having to take the phone out of the dock. Clever, eh?

But have you tried making a speakerphone call using the dock?

Peope I've spoken to have been annoyed by it because the speaker and the mic are in the same place and the dock "bounces" the sound back into the mic, feeding back and annoying the person on the other end.

When will we have speakerdocks that are designed for iphone and don't ask for airplane mode to be turned on.
