Along with instant messaging, one of the features that many have missed on the iPhone is some sort of dedicated RSS feed reader. While you could use a web-based reader like Bloglines or Google Reader, they weren’t really designed for the iPhone. And while Apple provides its own RSS solution, it’s limited to just one feed at a time.
NewsGator has updated their mobile client with an interface designed specifically for the iPhone. The site will detect whether or not you’re browsing on an iPhone and, if so, will present you with a lightweight, easy-to-tap hierarchical menu of your feeds. To access it, just go to m.newsgator.com.
Best of all, NewsGator is integrated with popular Mac feed reader NetNewsWire, which you can set up to synchronize your subscriptions, including read items, with NewsGator Online. That means that you can easily browse your feeds on iPhone, and then return to your Mac and not have to read through the same items all over again (PC users can reap similar benefits by using NewsGator’s FeedDemon for Windows).
As much as I’d still like to see a full-fledged RSS reader on the iPhone’s Home screen, NewsGator Online’s new interface at least makes it easy to check my existing feeds.
(DISCLAIMER: Mac Publishing has a business relationship with NewsGator that includes providing services on Macworld.com, iPhone Central and Mac User.)
Actually, Bloglines has just announced i.Bloglines.com, their iPhone-optimized version. Looks good to me so far...
Bloglines recently rolled out a specially tailored version of their mobile interface for iPhones. See it at http://i.bloglines.com
YES! I've been waiting for a long time for this. ...like 3 weeks or something.
Check out iBloglines. It's Bloglines optimized for the iPhone.
Go to i.bloglines.com on your iPhone to get the best Feed Reading experience for the iPhone.
BTW - It was launched last week.
this is great! The first real web app that I use for the iPhone.
um, google reader *is* optimized for the iphone.
A few irks with NewsGator: logging in over and over (after a period of inactivity with the iPhone) isn't fun, you can't view previous entries only new (unless i'm missing something, which i hope is the case), and if you read an entry on your desktop with NetNewsWire, then mark it "unread," that status isn't updated back on NewsGator.
Doesn't seem to have an option to remember you. It's a bit of a pain to sign in every time you want to check your feeds.
@ward: it remembers me. You just have to bookmark the right link. Not the original one, but the one it takes you too *after* it realizes you are using an iPhone. The bar will disappear, just scroll up to get to get it back and click the plus button. Be sure to bookmark it as you are looking at your main feeds.
A forum conversation with one of the developers confirmed this for me. He claims they designed the cookie to be persistent until you click the "logoff" button.
another cool tool for the iPhone
