A tip for using predictive typing

Posted by Jim Dalrymple | Monday, July 02, 2007 6:48 PM PT

I’ve talked to several people that are having some difficulty using the iPhone’s predictive typing feature. Here’s a tip that may help you if you’re having trouble using it.

Predictive typing is easily one of the best features on the iPhone, but you have to let it do it’s job. In other words, don’t stop and back up when you make a mistake, just keep typing and chances are the iPhone will correctly guess the word you meant to type.

I’ve had very few instances where the iPhone hasn’t come up with the word I meant to type. In fact, I’ve had a real mess of letters that the iPhone correctly predicted.

When you are typing and it suggests a word, just tap the spacebar and the word will be inserted for you. So basically if you just type away, by the time you get to the end of your sentence, everything should be spelled correctly.

Thanks, now I understand what they mean by "trust."

Just think of the generations in the future who will never have to learn spelling! Spelling bees on ESPN will be like horse drawn haywagon demonstrations.

Two more tips that =really= improved my speed . . .

Use the whole "pad" of your finger (or thumb) when typing, not just the tip. In other words, position your finger as if you were trying to leave a "criminal" fingerprint on the key you are selecting. Tap, don't press, however.

Also, for "problem" keys (mine seem to be O & P) keep your finger on them for a tiny extra fraction of a second. If the zoom reveals you hit the wrong one, don't lift and try again, just roll your finger left or right to grab the correct key.

These made a HUGE difference in my accuracy and speed.

Dan is right. You have to use the 'ball of your thumbs" - you have to aim at about the middle of your nail to hit the 'ball of your thumbs.' After I started aiming using the middle of my nail, I was hits the keys well!

The predictive typing is good but why 'learn' to type wrong, just type right the first time!

I can type all day long on the bottom two row of keys -- it's the top keys that don't work well for me. Trying all sorts of angles, fingers, thumbs. I think the keys are too close to the app window . . . I'm constantly tapping into the email, instead of the keys. The worst is U, O, E.

As I have never owned a "smart phone", one with a qwerty keyboard with buttons, I do not have any "baggage" or ingrained tendencies. I picked up the iPhone and started typing using both thumbs right away. For me, it seems to be working just fine.

Trust in Apple! :-)

Pity it doesn't correct "it's" and "its."

Dan's 'pad' advice is good but not sure about his O&P tip. Instead, just keep going. Chances are the iPhone will guess the right word. I think if you look at what you type you're going too slow.

Any advice for rejecting the predictive typing feature's recommendation?

I hate it when I type the word I want, only to have Apple replace it with an incorrect work when I hit the space bar!
