A simple iPhone case alternative

Posted by Rob Griffiths | Monday, July 02, 2007 12:05 PM PT

iphonecases.jpgWhile I wait a bit to see what comes along in the way of cases for the iPhone, I wanted something to protect the iPhone from general abuse. On a lark, I slipped the iPhone into the felt-like case that’s bundled with the current iPods. As you can see in the photo at left (click for a larger image), it actually fits quite well.

It’s not perfect, but it’s more than good enough until I can do some more investigating on the available case options.

This is what I've been doing...works well.

I purchased an inCase iPhone sleeve at the Apple Store along with my 8G iPhone. The sleeve was poorly designed and the leather and stitching didn't work for me. I pulled out my Ipod video sleeve and it works fine as a sleeve for the iPhone until something more elegant ( i.e. a flip glove leather sleeve such as DLO's products for the Ipod) comes along.

this is exactly what i've been doing too. i even asked the guys at the apple store if they had any more. great idea. maybe for future versions apple can include one specific for the iPhone.

how about the ipod socks? multi coloured and you can even use it to wipe the screen. plus throw it into the laundry when it gets grimy.

In fringe reception areas, touching the metal parts of the case degrades signal, so a case or skin you can use while making calls or using EDGE is pretty much a necessity.

A rubber-like non-skid skin is especially useful so you can prop the phone up at about the same angle as the dock provides, which definitely improves reception, perhaps because it keeps the antenna aligned with the tower's signal polarization.

Sigh. At least you guys got one. The store out here ran out shortly after opening and I had to order the phone. AT&T can't even tell me when it's going to come.

Everyone always underestimates the desire for technology out here in the burbs. This burb in particular happens to be home to a bunch of physicists and no one ever seems to notice that.

A super-soft pouch my wife had in a drawer somewhere works for me. It came with one of the 30 pairs of sunglasses she has.

(I'll bet she's spends more on sunglasses, purses and hair care products in a year than I spent on my iPhone).

The Belkin hip holster is barely adequate. And they included a prophylatic for the iphone screen that had so much glue on the paper tab it was useless as well as unnecessary. I am going to look into the InCase Leather Folio as it appears its belt clip doesn't jam into your side.
