Red light? No, green light

greenlight.jpgAs I just posted over at Macworld, it appears that anyone who decided not to brave the crowds at their local Apple Store Friday need not worry about getting shut out from buying an iPhone today. Apple has an iPhone Availability Checker on its Web site, where green dots denote iPhones are still available and red ones let you know to move it along, there’s nothing to see here. As of 9:30 a.m. Pacific Saturday morning, all those dots are green.

It's really nice of them, and it will definitely be helpful on when the next shipment arrives.... But it's only updated once a day at 9 p.m. So even though as of 9:30 a.m. the light was green here in Vegas, that was around the time the last one was sold. All the at&t stores in the area are sold out too... Here's to a speedy second shipment.

Yes, as Drew said, it says very clearly that it is updated at 9pm so you will know if they have iPhones at 9am the next day--and they advise you to arrive early.

I have to say, those shades of red and green they're using are virtually indistinguishable for someone who's red/green color deficient like me. (I ain't color blind, some reds and greens seem pretty close, like these) Luckily I can hold the mouse on it and it pops up with text. Just sayin', though.

I'm also not sure if that red/green distinguishes between 4's and 8's. If a store is out of one kind, it may still be green.

They seem pretty reluctant to say over the phone what's really in stock. It may be one of those corporate prepared talking points: don't say what's in stock, get them in the store and they'll buy whichever we have left.

I've been trying to buy an 8. My local apple store is out of stock, but you can only find that out with a phone call. So I guess you call around at 9am, and hope you get to one with stock before it sells out. In other words, the green dot is useless, unless you don't care what size you get. If you care, you still have to call around.
