New York readies for the iPhone with huge crowds

Posted by Jim Dalrymple | Friday, June 29, 2007 3:03 PM PT

It’s about 2:45 pm here in New York City and the 5th Avenue Apple Store is packed with people waiting outside anticipating the iPhone. This store, like the other Apple Stores, closed between 2:00 and 6:00 to prepare for the launch.

When I arrived early this morning there were already large network television trucks parked outside the front of the store and reporters from every type of magazine and newspaper you can think of patrolling the line of people.

As the day went on things got more exciting and a bit whacky too. Everyone from the Chase Manhattan Bank to F.A.O Schwartz and Krispy Kreme donuts made their way up and down the line offering goodies deals and pamphlets to everyone waiting in line.

Some companies gave out free shirts to get people to wear, balloons were handed out — it was kind of like a circus at times.

I’m heading back down to the store to take some pictures (my flash card died this morning, so I had to run around New York to get another one). Soon I’ll have my phone and will be able to give you all the details and answers to all the questions we’ve been getting.

Hello Jim,

I hope you have lots of pictures to show us when you get back. Can't wait to see the new phone.

Cheers,
B

"...the 5th Avenue Apple Store is packed with people waiting outside..."

I know the store's design is unusual (and very effective), but...the above sounds topologically impossible.
