More iPhone FAQs, this time from Apple
Hot on the heels of AT&T’s FAQ comes one directly from the iHorse’s mouth. Apple has posted a number of questions and answers about several different facets of the iPhone, including shedding light on some details that we didn’t know about yet.
There’s news on iPod/iPhone accessories:
Can I use iPod accessories with my new iPhone? There’s a picture of the iPhone power adapter (looks pretty much identical to the iPod power adapter), and what appears to be the iPhone/Bluetooth headset dock (above).
iPhone has the same 30-pin dock connector as the iPod, so many properly designed accessories can be used with both iPhone and iPod. However, iPhone may cause audio interference with some iPod accessories. Products that are engineered and certified to be compatible with the iPhone will carry the “Works with iPhone” logo on their packaging.
We also learn a bit about iPhone’s security features:
What kind of security features does iPhone offer?Despite that, there’s no word on whether or not secure email standards like SSL are included.
You can protect your iPhone with a four-digit password, which is then required whenever iPhone is turned on or wakes from sleep. For secure Internet access, iPhone supports industry-standard Wi-Fi security and virtual private networking (VPN).
In addition, Apple says you can’t use your own SIM card, but should use the one included with the iPhone. To whether or not you can unlcok the iPhone and use it with other cell carriers, they provide this evasive response:
AT&T is the exclusive wireless carrier for iPhone in the United States. If you currently use another wireless carrier, you can choose to transfer your number when you activate your AT&T account. It’s not technically a “no” and we’re sure some enterprising iPhone owners will give it a try before long.

As I understand it it is perfectly legal to lock a phone, but illegal to prevent its unlocking. Seems to me they are preventing its unlocking. Is it going to be lawsuit time?

Actually, Apple specifically does not say that you can't use your own SIM card. They just say you "should" use the included one. I'm guessing that's just to make sure that you have an up-to-date SIM card, to ensure compatibility (I remember some Treos having problems with certain SIM cards in the past). One related item of interest, though, is that the AT&T FAQ says you can't simply put your SIM card in and go; you have to activate the iPhone.
Regarding support for SSL for mail: I would be shocked if that wasn't in there. TLS is pretty much part of the IMAP, POP3, and SMTP standards nowadays, and with VPN support in, I can't imagine them leaving that out.

How about "You seem to be including a dock with every iPhone. Is it a universal dock that I can use with an insert in a couple years when you start making people buy them sepearately?"

Any idea what the little notch is on the top right side of the dock?

How about you buy an iPhone and when you take it home to activate and runs the credit approval it gets denied, will Apple allow you to return the phone without a 10% restocking fee?

Ben,
That's for charging the Apple crack pipe, I mean optional bluetooth earpiece (well, it really does look just like a crack pipe... though I can honestly say that I have never ever held or used one)

If you buy the Apple bluetooth earpiece, it can charge in the dock by standing up in it. But I don't care, because I own a cool, silver, futuristic-looking "Jawbone" headset by Aliph
