Line report: Danbury, CT (updated x2)

Oren Krinsky and Giovanni Scaringi in the iPhone lineFellow iPhone wanna-own and IT compatriot Bill Jackson and I headed east to Danbury, Connecticut rather than south to NYC in hopes of avoiding the longer lines of the hyped-up New York City crowd. We ended up arriving about 90 minutes later than expected due to an accident on the Interstate. But, as we’d hoped, the lines were nowhere near as long as what we’d heard about in NYC.

The line at the Apple store is just over 100 people long and, according to a security guard who was passing out water and playing cards to everyone one in line, there’s a much shorter line—about 30-40 people—at the AT&T store downstairs. The difference? You can only get one iPhone at the AT&T store. You can get two at the Apple store.

Sounds like there might be a few phones on eBay in about 40 minutes.

Shortly after we arrived several Apple Store employees (there look to be about 20+ inside the store) began taking the wraps off the outside of the store to hoots and hollers from the crowd.

I’m going in for a closer look and to spend a few minutes with the first guy in line.

(Update: Doors just opened and we’ve gotten word that 30 people are going to be let into the store at a time and that there will be two different lines. One for express buyers and another for those who want to cop an iPhone feel before they buy.)

(Update 2: The store opened at 6:00 p.m. sharp and it took about 30 minutes to get from where we were at the end of the line into the store. Everyone that purchased an iPhone was greeted by a line of Apple Store employees clapping and cheering as they walked down the aisle. There are no iPhone activations in the store, so those making purchases paid, got a great looking bag with an iPhone inside, and walked right out the door. A fact that anyone who’s had to spend time in a cellular store waiting to buy a phone is certain to appreciate.

We spent about 40 minutes playing with the iPhone and, first impressions being everything, I was truly tempted to throw discretion (and my Verizon) contract to the wind and lay down the ducats for an iPhone. Hype it ain’t… this is one slick phone. I’ll wait, but I may need a bib and someone to wipe the drool off my face for the next six months.)

i want my iPhone NOW. can it be true: the WEST coast has to suffer for an additional 3hrs ;o(

I went to the Hartford store at 9 pm. No line. Walked right up to the counter, picked up the iPhone 8 GB without delay, and out the door. Total time was about 5 mins.

Sometimes patience is a virtue. :)
