iPhones…activate!

iTunes iconIn addition to the plan pricing, Apple and AT&T let drop another tidbit that had been on the mind of some users: activation. A few weeks ago, it was confirmed that the iPhone would require an iTunes account. The reasoning? Simple: that’s how activating your new iPhone will be handled. Straight from the horse’s mouth:

“Users will be able to activate their new iPhone in the comfort and privacy of their own home or office, without having to wait in a store while their phone is activated,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “There are tens of millions of people in the US who already know how to sync their iPods with iTunes, and syncing their new iPhone with iTunes works the same way.”
According to Apple, signing up for your new plan “takes only minutes,” though we’re still lacking some details; foremost in my mind “will number portability be available?” I’d have to guess yes, as it seems like AT&T is very interested in poaching subscribers from other cell phone companies [Update: Yep, number portability is available, according to the iPhone activation walkthrough]. Existing AT&T customers, according to the press release, will be able to keep their numbers and upgrade their account to work with the iPhone.

Here’s what you’ll need, according to Apple:

an Internet connection; an iTunes Store account or a major credit card; a valid Social Security number (as required by AT&T); the latest version of iTunes available at www.itunes.com and a PC or Mac with a USB 2.0 port and one of the following operating systems: Mac OS® X v10.4.10 or later; Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later; or Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise or Ultimate Edition.

We’ll say this though: with Apple designing an activation method, the result is likely to be far simpler than any other process in the industry today.

Do we know if the iPhone will retain its other functions if we don't buy the AT&T plan? Could I still use it as an iPod, Address Book, and Calendar?

What about accessing the web via Bluetooth if I'm in a hot zone?

The big questions that goes unanswered though is can I transfer an existing number using the iTunes activation, and can I create a family plan for two iPhones as well.

All above questions are answered in the following video.

http://www.apple.com/iphone/usingiphone/activation.html

If you watch the NEW video on activation it confirms you can do all of this.

I'll bet lots of people are in this boat: My wife wants a "simple" phone and I of course want my iPhone, now [g]. So looking at the announced family plan deal, I have two big questions.

Can we combine something like a Samsung flip phone and the iPhone on a family plan and how do we active the Samsung (presumably at the store)?

And what does it mean in the footnote on the family plans when it says "*Includes one line. Additional iPhone lines are $29.99 each." Is that $30 after the iPhone and Samsung, or $30 for the Samsung (no thanks) or $30 if it's a second (or third?) iPhone?

Check out Bob's iPhone in the latest activation video. It has an amazing 74.4 GB of storage capacity;-) Is that the iPhone 2.0 we should be waiting for? Also, what about business costumers? AT&T doesn't seem to allow you to add the $20 data plan if you have a business plan ... kind of dumb,

I’m wondering about the ability to add to an existing at&t account. Not transfer from an existing account. My wife is on at&t already with her cell phone of choice. We also have the at&t land line, and they are both together as one bill, under her name. Will I be able to add an iPhone to her account in addition to the land line and her cell phone, and keep it all on the same bill? Or do I have to add an individual account since it's going to be in my name? Or, more simply put, can I add an iPhone account in my name to her current at&t account, to keep them all under one roof? Not that it's too important. If necessary, I'll just get my own individual, but it would be nice to have that option.

The posted requirements will cause problems for some. It requires Mac OS X 10.4.10 AND it requires a USB 2.0 port. My wife will not be able to use her G3 iBook.

"a valid Social Security number (as required by AT&T)"

WTF does AT&T need my SSN for? They're not my employer, and that's not a valid use of an SSN.

Are they just searching for new ways to live up to their reputation for being evil?

"WTF does AT&T need my SSN for?"

I guess Apple/AT&T want to make sure only legal US residents get an iPhone. Why should immigrants be able to come to this country and take all the good iPhones away from real Americans!?

:)

"WTF does AT&T need my SSN for?"

The video says it's for a credit check. There's also a field for a "pre-approved AT&T credit check" or something, which I presume means you might be able to get a credit check in the store, and they'll give you a code. Not sure though.

From what I’ve read elsewhere, a SSN is not actually required. If you buy the phone and enter 999-99-9999, it will take you to the goPhone plan where you pay-as-you-go, paying in advance. The minutes are different and overall you’re paying a bit more, but you’re no longer under a 2-year agreement and don’t need a rediculous credit check.

Well worth it for me, even with good credit, simply as a matter of principle. I don’t care if they want to determine some “creditworthyness”, if it’s required then they’re not worthy of my business. It’s a digital service, if someone doesn’t pay or is a “deadbeat” as so many like to say, AT&T/Cingular could simply turn off service, require penalty fees, deposits, and more. They are not providing social security benefits, they don’t need a social security number.
