iPhone questions? We have answers.

iphonered.jpgFor a product that hasn’t even been released yet, there’s sure a lot of information out there about the iPhone. If you’ve scoured Apple’s 40-plus minutes of marketing videos, analyzed every word of the early reviews posted by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, and Newsweek, and committed Apple’s iPhone web site to memory, you know all there is to know about the iPhone.

But who has the time to do all that? Well, us, that’s who. We’ve watched the videos with Zapruder-like analysis, attended all the keynotes, talked to the insiders, and even held the phone in our own little hands for a few precious minutes. And so we’ve compiled everything that’s currently known about the iPhone into a comprehensive list of frequently-asked iPhone questions.

On June 29, we’ll all learn much more about the ins and outs of iPhone. But in the meantime, here’s 7,000 words of iPhone Q and A. And when you’ve done, if you’re still not satisfied, come back here and post your questions and we’ll do our best to answer them and add them to the FAQ.

And while you’re at it, check out David Pogue’s fresh new Often-Asked iPhone Questions article at the New York Times. David’s actually used an iPhone, so he knows of what he speaks.

Heard anything about tethering to a PC/Mac as a wireless modem ? That's an essential feature for me (and a competitive issue for the iPhone - Blackberry etc. has it). Let us know if you hear anything.

Copy and Paste? The WSJ's review indicated there is no copy and paste. Surely this cannot be true(?).

**What we don't yet know is whether you can assign different rings to different people**

Yes, you can, according to Apple's video.

I'm still trying to figure out if I can activate my iPhone on iTunes on a family plan with another non iPhone. I am switching from another carrier and want to port both phone numbers. I have an unlocked second phone. Will AT&T have to send me a new SIM for the second non iPhone? Would it be easier to switch first at an AT&T store and then just activate the iPhone on iTunes and add the data plan?

Any idea if the web browser has a popup blocker?

"Heard anything about tethering to a PC/Mac as a wireless modem?"

When I asked them in January, Apple said no. Sounds like no is the answer, at least for now.

"Copy and Paste? The WSJ's review indicated there is no copy and paste. Surely this cannot be true(?)."

I trust Walt, so it's probably true. It's kind of too bad -- what if I want to compose a blog post in e-mail and then paste it into a form box in Safari? Guess I'm out of luck.

"Any idea if the web browser has a popup blocker?"

No confirmation, but I'd bet it does. I can't envision spawning new windows with nothing but ads in them...

Most current version of iTunes is 7.2.

Apple's Tech Specs for the iPhone says 7.3 or higher is needed.

Is this correct?
