AT&T posts iPhone service FAQ

AT&TAT&T Wireless has posted a list of frequently asked questions about the iPhone. Most of it is stuff that we’ve already learned from Apple in the past week or so, but there are a few interesting points, especially for existing customers who are trying to figure out how the iPhone will integrate into their current contract. Here’s a taste:

Q. Can I add iPhone to a FamilyTalk plan?
A. Yes. Just go to an AT&T retail store, and mention you’d like to add a line to an existing account.

Q. Do I need to switch to a different FamilyTalk rate plan if I want to add iPhone?
A. No. You might want to upgrade your minutes since you are adding an additional line.

Q. I just upgraded my phone recently. Are there any penalties or restrictions for upgrading to iPhone right away?
A. No. Everyone can upgrade to iPhone right away.

Q. What if I currently have a GoPhone?
A. You will need to activate iPhone on a new account with a new phone number.

From the iPhone activation video, it appears that iTunes will handle even existing customers, but should you have any doubt about your iPhone and your existing AT&T service, the AT&T store seems to be the place you’ll want to be on launch day.

So no ability to port an existing number from at AT&T "GoPhone" (pay as you go) account, eh? So just when *will* they have this gap filled?

I called an AT&T store just now to try to get a definitive answer about Family Plans. No luck; they are just as bad as Verizon [grin].

First it was going to be $80, with a cryptic footnote. Now it's $109 for two iPhones sharing minutes. My question is what I'll pay for one iPhone and one basic phone with no data plan on the Family Plan.

Does anybody know? They claimed that I can make this happen Friday at their store, even though they can't quote me costs.

I really like that Apple has eliminated a LOT of what I hate about dealing with cell carriers, but there's still a long way to go.

Another thing that is not clear for me is the additional cost to have the international calls + data plan with your iPhone.

No luck trying to find the information on at&t site...

A friend of mine that works at "my" local AT&T store said she was having to get to work at 6am today for a 3 hour (or so) training on the iPhone. If that's the case for more than just here, someone at a store might know more now...but can they talk about what they know? That's probably the real question! ;)

I had 3 phones on a family plan. Switched my phone only to an iPhone. $20/month added for the iPhone data plan. That was the only change.
