Think we can call the local at&t store and find out this info? I heard they aren't getting the shipments in until friday. the reason for 6pm. But you would almost think they would know how many they are getting.

@Ben: It'd be nice, wouldn't it? As of yesterday when I was calling AT&T stores, they were decidedly reluctant to give out information on stock, so I think you're going to have to take your chances.

i called my AT&T store last night to see how many they would have. they didn't know at the time. i'll repeat the call today.
there was a rumor mentioned on a CNN video about the iPhone that 3 million have been produced. for those of you into math, if there are 2,500 stores selling (this is way more than reality -- 1,800 AT&T stores and 200+ apple stores). even if only 2 mil made it out, that's an average of 800 per store. of course, that's all based on a rumor that might not be true.

It would be very nice :) I'll give my store a call later today. I also heard a rumor about the number produced and it was 4 million.

Unless you are a market analyst or planning to burglarize your local AT&T store - why would you want to know how many they have in stock?! Whether you can get one has as much to do with how many people are buying in front of you as it does with how many are in stock.
I think AT&T employees are probably reluctant to give out that information because it shouldn't matter to the general public. So if they say they have 400 in the store compared to 500, that will make a difference in your buying decision?
Being an Apple Fan is one thing, but being a wonk stock manager wannabe is just wierd.

@MacnnGregor: "So if they say they have 400 in the store compared to 500, that will make a difference in your buying decision?"
No, but if they have 50 as opposed to 500, that might make me consider going elsewhere.

As I understand this, the red or green light gets refreshed at 9pm every night, so you can know if you can go at 9am the next day. If I have this wrong, then please correct me, but if I'm right, it is good to know for some people who might think this is updated constantly. The point being, after launch day, if you want to check after 9pm, they won't be taking calls, but you can check online if they will have some iphones at that store the next morning at 9am.

i stopped in my local mall today (i'm lucky enough to have 4 apple stores all within a 30 minute drive) where my nearest apple store resides, also with an AT&T store. the apple store employees were decidedly tight-lipped about telling any details about "if" or "how many" iPhones they had in stock.
so i strolled down to the AT&T store and they HAD in fact just received their iPhone shipment. i asked one guy and he said he thought there were about 10 boxes back there with about 10 iPhones per box, so around 100 iPhones total. take it for what you will....
... now i just need to convince my wife to get in line at the at&t store while i wait in line at the apple store.... hmmm....

I think you guys have missed the point. The main reason i want to know is because i don't want to waste my time if they are only getting in say 10. I know I can't get line before 10 people. I have a job and can't take off to go stand in line.
