Apple prepping iPhone RSS web app

iPhone RSSAt least Apple’s putting their money where their mouth is. Many third-party developers were disappointed that the solution for making apps for the iPhone was web-based, but Apple is apparently prepping its own web-based app, an RSS reader, hosted at reader.mac.com. While the app “can only be viewed using the iPhone,” the screenshot seems to very much mimic Safari’s RSS interface.

RSS is, to me, one of the potential killer apps for the iPhone. There are plenty of web-based readers out there already, such as Google Reader, Bloglines, and at least one third-party RSS web app designed for the iPhone. It remains to be seen what Apple’s implementation will offer (other than a surely slick interface), but could this also hint at greater .Mac integration with the iPhone? I find it somewhat odd, as my colleague Derik DeLong first pointed out to me, that Apple is making a big deal about Yahoo!’s support of “push” email, while the same feature is lacking from .Mac’s offering.

As far as RSS on the iPhone goes, I still say Apple should let a real newsreader come and play.

Update: Gruber points out that the screenshot on the Apple page has now changed from the one you see above into a generic picture of the iPhone. Hey, Apple: see this? This is the bag. And that, wayyyyy over there is the cat.
